Developers with illegal road signs are high dollar contributors to McKay campaign; McKay's illegal signs are across the street from merchant being forced to take down his sign
To the Editor:
Selective and arbitrary are probably the best words to describe enforcement of the sign provisions of the St. Mary’s County Zoning Ordinance. Ineffective, inept, and incompetent are good words to describe the administration of the St. Mary’s County Zoning Ordinance. Commissioner President McKay has erected a very large campaign sign at the corner of Millstone Landing Road and Rt.235, well in excess of the allowable 32 square ft maximum size called out in the very same Zoning Ordinance he enacted. I submitted a “citizen’s inquiry” regarding this sign over 1 month ago. All I’m told by the Director of Land Use and Growth Management is that the case is “an on-going investigation.” I imagine the case will remain under “on-going investigation” until at least Election Day in November.
Every weekend, wealthy developers are being allowed to trash the area with their “NEW HOMES” signs, in blatant violation of the Ordinance, seemingly with impunity. Not surprisingly, most of these developers are high dollar contributors to the McKay for Senate campaign. Meanwhile, right across the street from the McKay campaign headquarters, small business owner Richard Shin is being forced by Mr. McKay’s staff to reduce the size of his DECORATORS TRADING CO sign in the San Souci plaza because it’s larger than the size limits set forth in the Zoning Ordinance. Selective and arbitrary. If you’re a wealthy developer, or the President of the County Commissioners, you don’t have to obey the Zoning Ordinance. If you’re a small business owner, forget it. Unless you have the right political connections, you’re going to have to obey the Ordinance or face $200 per day fines.
