| Dickerson Named Acting Administrator of MTA | |
| HANOVER,
MD - Transportation Secretary Robert L. Flanagan today announced the appointment of
Assistant Transportation Secretary Lisa L. Dickerson as the Acting Administrator of the
Maryland Transit Administration (MTA). Ms. Dickerson will serve as the agency's
chief executive officer responsible for the overall vision and direction of the
3,000-employee transit agency. The MTA operates bus, light rail, subway, MARC
commuter rail, commuter bus and paratransit service in the Baltimore Metropolitan
Region. It also is responsible for transit planning, statewide. "As assistant secretary, Lisa Dickerson has had great success in improving the MTA paratransit operation, implementing MBE reform at MDOT and increasing the hiring of women and minorities," said Secretary Flanagan. "It is because of her dynamic leadership ability and her ability to get things done that that I have asked her to conduct a top to bottom review of the MTA and its operations. Lisa will report back to me with steps we can take to improve MTA service across the board." In addition to her transit experience with the Department of Transportation, Ms. Dickerson has an extensive transportation background in the private sector. For 13 years she was president and chief executive officer of AMI, Inc., the largest airport ground transportation business in the Washington metropolitan area. In this capacity she managed contracts providing transportation services between Dulles, Reagan National and BWI airports. Ms. Dickerson also instituted the paratransit program for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. "Our focus as an agency will always be safety, our customers and our employees," said Ms. Dickerson. "With 3,200 employees, nearly every person in Baltimore is either a customer or has a family member employed by the MTA. Transit opens doors to opportunity and a better quality of life. It is with this in mind that we, at the MTA, will work to improve every facet of our operation." Prior to joining MDOT, Ms. Dickerson served as the manager of national field operations for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Throughout her life and career, she has worked tirelessly to promote civil rights and equal opportunity. Ms. Dickerson was president of a Washington, D.C. based consultancy that provided a broad range of advisory service relevant to minority, small and women-owned businesses interested in government procurement. Ms. Dickerson is the daughter of respected human rights pioneer Walter M. Dickerson who directed the Baltimore office of the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and was Maryland's statewide coordinator for affirmative action. |
