District Officer Dies While
Assisting Citizen With Pet
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A district police officer suddenly collapsped while attempting to
catch a dog which had gotten away from a citizen in Northwest DC on Sunday. He was
identified as Sergeant John Ashley who worked in the department's Second District.
The 37-year-old Ashley had been with the department seven years.
According to police, Sergeant Ashley was on routine patrol in the 16-hundred block of 30th
Street in Northwest at around five p.m., when he was stricken and was taken to George
Washington University Hospital and pronounced dead about a half hour later.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death
