Evelyn Joan Martin
US Navy WWII Veteran

Evelyn Joan Martin, 87, of Leonardtown, MD, died on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD.

Born on October 2, 1917 in Georgiaville, RI, she was the daughter of the late Clovis Trembley and the late Eva Gledu.

Mrs. Martin was a 1943 graduate of the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse, and a member of the Rhode Island Hospital Nurse Alumni Association. Mrs. Martin was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy serving in the World War II effort. Her first tour of duty at San Diego Naval Hospital is where she met and married her husband, a naval physician in 1944. After her honorable discharge in 1944, she returned to her home state of Rhode Island where she was employed as the school nurse for the Johnston School District awaiting her husband’s return home from the war to start a private medical practice in Greenville, RI which they owned and operated for seven years. In 1953 they agreed to close the practice where she followed her husband who had rejoined the Navy as a pilot and flight surgeon to many various duty stations throughout the years. Mrs. Martin was beloved and well known for her sharp wit, her gourmet cooking and entertaining skills, and was an avid collector of dolls and an extremely talented designer and seamstress of doll clothing, often raffling her doll crafts for the benefit of the local catholic churches.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years Dr. Richard James Martin of Leonardtown, MD and her children Brian Richard Martin of Miami, FL; Jacqueline Mary Martin of Collegeville, PA; and Robin Joan Riordon of Atascadero, CA. She is also survived by her siblings Henry Trembley, Yvonne Trembley, and L’or McDonald all of Greenville, RI; her three grandchildren Kelly Riordon, Kevin Riordon, Stephanie Olekszak and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings Clovis Trembley, Jr., Robert Trembley, Warren Dexter Trembley, Beatrice Cogswell, and Irene Manzi.

The family will receive friends at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Rd., Leonardtown, MD on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. with prayers at 5:00 p.m. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Leonardtown, MD at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Rory Conley officiating and accompanied by the homilist and longtime family friend and confidant Rev. John Mattingly. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
