The Lorretta House Arson ---
1992
CHAPTICO --- This old Jesuit Mission house formerly housed Jesuit priests who served
several parishes, including Our Lady of the Wayside, Sacred Heart and Holy Angels. After a
number of years, the Jesuits left St. Mary's and the Our Lady parish leased the building
to a group that housed youths with emotional problems. Several small arson fires preceded
this one which ended up destroying the building by fire getting into the walls and
telescoping up the exterior walls, making it very difficult for firefighters to battle the
blaze. Mechanicsville was assisted by Leonardtown, Avenue, Hollywood, Bay District,
Hughesville, Benedict and several other Charles County companies. |

This Amish farmhouse caught fire and
before firefighters from Mechanicsville were on the scene, neighbors of the family rushed
to the scene and passed out furniture to the nearby yard, right down to the dishes, to
prevent a total loss. No one was injured and the house was quickly rebuilt. An elder told
ST. MARY'S TODAY that there was no tragedy in the Rt. 236 community that night as the
house could easily be rebuilt. "No one was hurt, that was the important thing,"
he said. |

This is a typical accident scene for
Mechanicsville, which is one of St. Mary's County's busiest companies and runs a lot of
10-50's. Poles and trees usually win confrontations with vehicles. |
