Firefighters Lower Dogcatcher Down Cliff on Rope to Save Dog Which Was Stranded for 2 Days
LUSBY --- Calvert Sheriff's spokesman Deputy Chip Allen reports that Animal Control Officer Tom Guy responded to the beach at the end of Park Chesapeake Drive, Lusby, Md. for a report of a stranded dog. The dog had fallen 40 feet from a cliff overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. The dog became stranded on a rock ledge and had been barking for two days before being sighted by a person walking on the beach.
Solomons Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad responded to the scene. Using ladders and repelling ropes, Officer Guy was able to repel to the dog and fashion a harness around her. He and the dog were then pulled to safety.
The dog has been turned over to the Tri-County Animal Shelter awaiting the return of her owner. According Officer Guy, this was the first time he had repelled to save an animal, but he said he would gladly do it again.
