Funeral Arrangements Set for Cardinal James A. Hickey

            The funeral arrangements for Cardinal James A. Hickey, Archbishop of Washington from 1980-2000, are below. Cardinal Hickey died on Sunday, October 24, at age 84, following a long illness. Events are open to the public, space permitting, except for the private burial. A biography, photo and other information is online at www.adw.org.

Thursday, October 28

Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, 1725 Rhode Island Ave., NW, Washington, DC

10:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.:      Reception of the body followed by public viewing. Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, and the auxiliary bishops of Washington, will receive the body.

5:30 p.m.:      Mass for communities of religious: Cardinal McCarrick, principal celebrant; Boston Archbishop Sean O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., homilist. Archbishop O’Malley worked in the Archdiocese of Washington, primarily with the Latino community, for many years.

10:00 a.m.-7:30 p.m.:      Reception of the body by Auxiliary Bishop Kevin J. Farrell, followed by public viewing.

7:30 p.m.:      Vigil Mass: Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, principal celebrant; Bridgeport (CT) Bishop William E. Lori, homilist. Cardinal Hickey chose the homilist, a former priest of Washington and his close friend for over 20 years, as well as the location of the Mass; he received his minor orders while preparing for the priesthood and was ordained to the diaconate, the last step before ordination to the priesthood, in this church.

Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (Upper Church)

400 Michigan Avenue, NE, Washington, DC

 10:30 a.m.        Mass of Christian Burial (Funeral): Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, will be principal celebrant and homilist. Cardinal Hickey’s family; cardinals, bishops and priests from throughout the nation; members of religious communities; dignitaries; and parishioners will attend. Bridgeport (CT) Bishop William E. Lori will give a reflection at the end of Mass. Ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Washington, he was Cardinal Hickey’s theological advisor, priest secretary, vicar general and then auxiliary bishop for 18 years.

Approx. 12:30 p.m.:       Depart for private burial at Cathedral of St. Matthew, 1725 Rhode Island Avenue, NW. The procession will include family, bishops and priests. The bishops will assemble on the steps before accompanying Cardinal Hickey’s body into the church for the last time. Cardinal Hickey will be the second Archbishop of Washington to be buried in the Cathedral’s St. Francis Chapel; Cardinal Patrick O’Boyle was buried there following his 1987 death.
