The shameful performance of the
Great Mills High School Football Coaching Staff

To the Editor;

The GMHS Varsity’s first football game of the season against McDonough High School on Friday was a hard one to watch.
All due to the fact that it was badly coached. Final score: 51-0. It didn’t have to be that way.
After losing 48-0 at the half, any other coaching team would have admitted, that their strategy wasn’t working and changed it. The lineups that were on the field obviously didn’t get their jobs done, but did the GMHS coaches change their strategy or rotate the players? The answer is an astounding NO.
The same players were on the field, some playing in several different positions.
Maybe GMHS coaches are not familiar with how NFL coaches manage their teams?  There are extremely few guys even in the NFL playing two different positions unlike in the GMHS team. And its not because the GMHS Varsity doesn’t have enough qualified players.
 What kind of message are you sending to your players? That even though their teammates are failing, and the team is losing  -- they are not good enough to get to the field?

How can any high school coach justify NOT playing all the players, when there is nothing to lose? What kind of arrogance does that demonstrate?
GMHS players who have practiced just as hard as the players on the field,
had to stand at the sidelines knowing that even though their team is down by 51 points,
the GMHS coaching staff didn’t feel that they are good enough to be put on field – at all?
All the boys have been practicing since August and spend 3 hours after school 4-5 days a week,
to be on the football team and for what may I ask—to be qualified to stand on the sidelines?
Is their time and effort worth nothing to you?
How would that make you feel dear GMHS coach? Put the shoe on the other foot.

This same shameful practice has been going on for several years, no end or changes in sight.
That to me signals blatant favoritism and bad coaching, and I think it’s time for Principal Lymas to step up and to do something about this situation. I for one am sick of it.
I want some answers, not excuses, after a 3 year losing streak, shouldn’t there be changes?
