Purple Heart US Army WWII Veteran
Herbert Eugene “Gene” Norris, Jr., 81, of Hollywood, MD died December 5, 2004 in Hollywood, MD. Born December 3, 1923 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of the late Mary Lucille and Herbert Eugene Norris, Sr. He was the loving husband of Ruth Emily Lacey Norris whom he married on January 19, 1947 in Our Lady’s Church, Medley’s Neck.
He is survived by his children Larry Eugene Norris and his wife Cora of Leonardtown, MD, Phyllis Jeanette Anderson and her husband Russ, Thomas Anthony Norris and his wife Karen, Alan Patrick Norris and his wife Linda and John Michael Norris and his wife Heather all of Hollywood, MD, Lois Ann Dill and her husband Ron of Sandgates, MD, Dennis Wayne Norris and his wife Eleanor of Avenue, MD, Wanda Lee Loheed and her husband Rick of St. George Island, MD and Bonnie Sue Van Shoubrouek of Slidell, LA; brothers and sisters Joseph Elmer Norris of Chaptico, MD, Mary Virginia Bean of Park Hall, Mary Elizabeth Reddchase and Charles Benedict both of Grande Parie, TX, Agnes Marie Higgs of Medley’s Neck and Cora Frances Redmond of Dameron; grandchildren Jennifer Earhart, James Dill, Melissa Cullison, Amber Norris, Emily Norris, Tommy Norris, Jeff Norris, Jessica Norris, Kimberly Norris, Michelle Paretti, Danielle Carbajal, Brandy McNeal, Chrissy Norris, Lisa Norris, David Yost, Billy Yost, Nancy Wodsworth, Dennis Woodburn and January Loheed and great-grandchildren Kyle Woodburn, Kurt Woodburn, Nicholas Earhart, Kelsey Earhart, Lindsey McNeal, Hailey McNeal, Ella Paretti, LeeAnn Wodsworth, Robert Wodsworth and Joey Rock.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters Joseph Howard Norris, James Allen Norris, Alice Marguerite Haley, Thomas Edward Norris, Ernest Ignatius Norris, Andrew Paul Norris, Robert Dellie Norris and Mary Agnes Norris.
Mr. Norris was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where he worked as a Services Manager / Auto Mechanic for Fenwick Ford Motor Company until his retirement in 1992 after 48 years of service.
He served in the US Army from March 19, 1943 – October 5, 1945, where he served with the 36th Infantry Divison in Italy, France, Austria and Germany. Mr. Norris received the following honors: Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal and European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with Bronze Arrowhead. One of his favorite hobbies was gardening which he enjoyed very much.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 7 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home where prayers will be said at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 8 in St. John’s Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD at 10:30 AM with Father Raymond Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Larry Norris, Wayne Norris, Michael Norris, Thomas Norris, Alan Norris and Ron Dill. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rick Loheed, Russ Anderson, Danny Dean, Jessica Norris, Dave Schomaker and Jennifer Earhart. Contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary's, P.O.
