Home Fire Fatality
At about 9:00 PM on Saturday, November 13, 2004, Prince Georges and Montgomery County Firefighters and Paramedics were alerted for a house fire with an occupant trapped inside. A neighbor called 911 to report the fire in the 10400 block of Truxton Road in the Knollwood Community of the Beltsville/Adephi area. Upon arrival, firefighters found a 1-½ story cape cod style, single family home with heavy fire and smoke consuming the first floor. Simultaneously, firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack on the fire as additional firefighters started search and rescue of the trapped victim. The fire was contained within 15 minutes and the victim was located in a first floor hallway leading from a bedroom. The adult female victim was evaluated by paramedics and pronounced on the scene.
According to witness reports, two occupants were in the house when the fire occurred. A six-year-old male was able to escape the home and notified neighbors about the fire. Tragically, the youths grandmother, 65 years of age, was not able to escape the fire. Fire Investigators are searching for the exact cause of the fire; they have ruled out foul play and are evaluating accidental causes. Damage estimates are set at $80,000 to the structure and $20,000 to the contents. The County Office of Emegency Management will assist the five remaining family members with temporary shelter. Identification of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family members.
