HOYER STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF
ROBERT BEAN
WASHINGTON - House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the
following statement today in memory of Hill staffer Robert Bean, a longtime and respected
public servant, who passed away late last week:
"I am greatly saddened by the passing of Mr. Robert Bean who was my
friend and colleague for many years.
"I was proud to call Bob Bean a good friend and close advisor. Bob made a tremendous difference in Washington,
D.C. and Maryland through both his public service and private life. He touched an enormous number of people, and all
who had the privilege to meet and know him were truly impressed by his kindness,
dedication, and intelligence. Bob was taken from those who knew and loved him far too
early in life, and I will cherish my fond memories of the time that we spent together.
"I knew Bob for many years before he served as the Democratic Staff
Director for the House Administration Committee when I was the Ranking Democrat. However, our time together at the Committee simply
reinforced my respect for Bob's work ethic and political knowledge. He was someone you could rely on to get things
done right and done fast. For example, his
work on the Help America Vote Act was key to successfully enacting that landmark election
reform bill.
"Bob had a keen political sense and an extensive knowledge and
understanding of how things work in Washington. He
also had an excellent ability to foster relationships and to build alliances all with an
eye towards getting the job done. Bob also
was a willing mentor to many young people trying to get a start in the rough and tumble
political world of Washington.
"From his years on Capitol Hill, Bob had many friends, both Democrat
and Republican, including everyone from the Capitol elevator operators to former Secretary
of the Treasury Robert Rubin. Bob was always
quick with a smile and hello.
"Bob's distinguished career spanned from Capitol Hill to the White
House and back again. He was the Deputy
Assistant Secretary at the Office of Legislative Affairs and Public Liaison in the
Department of the Treasury from 1995 to 1999 and before that he was the Deputy Sergeant at
Arms in the United States Senate from 1991 to 1995. Bob
also served as the Assistant Secretary for the Majority in the United States Senate from
1986 to 1991 and was a Senior Staff Member in the Democratic Cloakroom of the United
States Senate from 1979 to 1986.
"Bob graduated with a J.D. from Washington College of Law at the
American University and with a B.B.A. from George Washington University.
"Most recently he had taken a position with the Jefferson Consulting
Group and was a consultant to the U.S.-China Commission.
"I offer my sincere condolences to the Bean family. I hope that the knowledge that Bob was loved and
respected by all those who knew him will provide them some comfort in this time of deep
sorrow."
