Is McKay Behind Effort to Block
Super
Wal-Mart In Order to Save His Own Business?
To the Editor:
I was surprised to find out that there is opposition to the proposed expansion of the Wal-Mart in California, Maryland.
Opposing the expansion of a business doesn't make sense for
a government reliant on taxes and amounts to economic protectionism. Last time I checked,
the United States was a democratic society with a "free market" based economy.
Therefore, I wrongly assumed that my local government would support a position conducive
to "free market" forces.
I have been a county resident for twelve years. I am registered Republican, but somehow
managed to vote Democrat in the last election. I have a family and largely avoid politics,
because like most Americans, I hold politicians in very low regard.
My assertion that most Americans hold politicians in low esteem has been sustained through several major polls. I work for the government in a mid-level management position and I am a commuter. That's right the next time your stuck in a traffic jam, I'm probably the guy next to you. I'm still really, really, cranked off about the "clown shoes" wearing politician that voted against a ferry going to the Eastern Shore, because it might cause traffic to increase!
That's my best example of a politician that has no
connection with reality. A thought I often contemplate while sitting in TRAFFIC trying to
get to the Eastern Shore! Wadda' dope! So, I live in your county. I vote, but hold my nose
when doing so. I work for the federal government. I have a family and a commute.
Therefore, if most demographic studies of the county are correct---I'm your average
resident.
The bottom line is that I'm the average guy and I want the cheapest consumer goods
possible. This means---WALMART! Even better---SUPER WALMART! I don't believe the arguments
I've heard that it will make traffic any worse, because I'm not convinced it can get any
worse. I'm very suspicious that one of politicians involved is named McKay and there is a
grocery chain named McKay's that could lose business, if Wal-Mart expands. I don't believe
the argument that Wal-Mart is anti-union, because I see plenty of cars with pro-union
bumper stickers sitting the parking lot of the existing Wal-Mart. The only thing that can
happen if Wal-Mart expands are positive things. For example, maybe the average resident of
St. Mary's could get diapers for their children at the cheapest
price. Perhaps, existing small business owners would adapt and evolve, much like Darwin
suggested and find new markets to explore. I have to admit though, the best thing that
could happen is that I could get consumer goods at cheap prices.
In short, the politicians opposed to a Super Wal-Mart are screwing up---again! You already
screwed me out of a ride to the Eastern Shore on a ferry---so I'm not gonna sit on the
sidelines for this one. If you disagree with me, fine. I only have one question,
"Where in the hell is the movie theater we were promised five years ago?" Do
yourself a favor and do what politicians do best---vote to save their asses!
Change your mind and let Wal-Mart expand. One more thing, I
have no connection with Wal-Mart other than the fact I shop there.
