Jarboe Proposes Switch to Police Department
LEONARDTOWN --- Is it time for the Sheriff to turn over the reins of law enforcement in St. Mary's? If a proposal floated by St. Mary's Commissioner Larry Jarboe (R. Golden Beach) takes hold, it could well be.

Jarboe said that in light of the Sheriff departments inability to police itself, it may be time for a force that is not run by a single elected official and can be held accountable by the county.

The reasons that Jarboe cited for making the change are the newspaper raid of ST. MARY'S TODAY that took place election eve of 1998 that involved seven deputies and has resulted in a major legal loss for the county in a case which has gone all the way to the United States Supreme Cour; the tractor-trailer load full of construction materials that was illegally released by the assistant sheriff to his stepson and best friend from the Sheriff's compound; continued discrimination in promotions of blacks and women deputies and the brawls between  off duty deputies at Solomon's and Piney Point.
