Joseph Kelly Gibson
WWII US Navy Veteran

Joseph “Joe” Kelly Gibson, 97, of Bushwood, MD died on November 10, 2004 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born March 15, 1907 in Abell, MD he was the son of the late Mary Agnes Bietzell and Joseph Edwin Gibson. He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite H. Gibson whom he married in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bushwood, MD on December 27, 1939. He is survived by his niece Mary Ann Hayden and her husband Roland of Bushwood, MD; his sister Mary Helen Sanders of Orlando, FL and by many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters Henry Gibson, Bessie Gibson, Alfred Gibson, Dick Gibson, Bernard Gibson, Francis Gibson and Louis Gibson. He was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where he was the owner/operator of Old Gum Tavern in Bushwood, MD. He also served in the U.S. Navy from May, 3, 1943 – October 1945 on the USS Marblehead. He belonged to the American Legion Post 221 and enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, gardening and playing pitch. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 14 in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home from 2 – 5 PM with prayers being said at 3 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 15 at 11 AM in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Francis J. Early officiating. Interment will follow the church cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Gibson will be J.R. Hayden, George Allan Hayden, J.C. Vallandingham, Francis Gibson, Bernard “Jackie” Gibson and Robert Bailey. Contributions may be made to the 7th District Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 7, Avenue, MD 20609 and/or Holy Angels Sacred Heart School, 21335 Coltons Point Road, Avenue, MD 20609.
