Summer Storm Leaves Restaurant Patrons in the Dark
CALIFORNIA--- Customers of the Hot Noodle, the Monterrey and a coffee shop in the San Souci Shopping Center were left in the dark on Wednesday night when storms swept through the area.  In Monterrey, a popular dining spot, the usual quick service already was leaving a bit to be desired when the lights went out.  With no candles brought around to tables and all the waiters deciding to take a siesta on the front sidewalk benches, customers were left to sit and wait in the dark for lights which never came on, with no one attempting to do anything. Clueless in California.  Finally, customers of the Monterrey got up and left without getting served or even being brought more chips or iced tea.  With fair prices and good food, the Monterrey packs in a big crowd every night making the investment in a good generator or power back up, perhaps simply candles, a price they can afford.  Strangely, half of the San Souci still had power and the Japanese steak house was drawing customers who left Monterrey.
Power was out all the way down Rt. 235 leaving the Wawa stranded without any streams of customers, the snobby seafood joint called the Tides was dark as the builders and owners evidently thought the power would never fail them.  Also dark was the Hampton Inn and the Damons steakhouse. The power grid lit up again at the intersection of Rt. 235 and Pegg Road where the new Marriott hotel was bright and open.
A trip into the Lone Star to eat revealed that they were out of ice on the hottest day of the year and the manager was tired of going to the 7-11 to buy ice. The prime rib was half fat but the waitress tried to make amends by offering some additional prime rib to take home but Jack Sprat can eat no fat and his wife can eat no lean.  Don't buy the prime rib.
There were no visible marks on the floor where the recent murder of a Lone Star manager took place and no patrons seemed to care that they were eating dinner in the middle of a murder scene, perhaps thanks to TV.   The Outback is always dependably good and the huge crowds standing in line to get in are testament to that fact.....and they had power.
Power was out in the south end of St. Mary's, and in Valley Lee and Medley's Neck.  A tree came down on Old Village Road in Mechanicsville and SMECO turned back up the juice full blast about 10 pm.

Woman Fears Boyfriend Will Kill Her
Man Charged with Beating of Peggy Beatley Will Come To Trial Next Week
Will Jeffery Reid be convicted of charges of brutally beating Beatley in the parking lot of the Bay District firehouse while she frantically called for help to 911?    Beatley says that Reid calls her and clicks the trigger of a gun, over and over and then hangs up. She claims she will be the next woman to die in St. Mary's County at the hands of an abusive ex-boyfriend.  The St. Mary's Sheriff's Dept. took months to track him down as he simply went around the county as he pleased.
See this coming week's print edition for details on how the States Attorney's Office and the Sheriff handled this case.

Road Rescue Fatal for Elderly Woman & Dog
OWINGS -(July 27, 2005) -- Calvert Sheriff's spokesman Dep. Theodore Allen reports that a woman's attempt to save her dog from highway traffic turned out real bad for her and the dog when she rushed onto the highway and was struck and killed. On July 27th, 2005 at 10:23 pm, Deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Maryland Rt. 4 and Mt. Harmony Road, Owings, for a report of a pedestrian that was struck by a car.  Preliminary investigation revealed that Jean Wright Linehan, 88, of Owings, was attempting to remove her dog from the northbound lanes of Maryland Rt. 4 when she was struck and killed by a vehicle operated by Erik Scott Glassman, 24, of Arlington, Va.  Linehan’s dog was also struck and killed. Glassman was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. He was treated and released. The crash is still under investigation by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team.

Big Development in Morganza Rejected
LEONARDTOWN (July 26, 2005)
Ace Reporter Sean Rice has this BREAKING NEWS --- Just three months after the St. Mary's Commissioners, on a 3-2 vote, approved a water allocation which would allow a new large development in the rural preservation district, in Morganza, the Planning Commission turned down an approval request for 111 lots by developer Dean Beck. ...this action was taken at the Monday night meeting of the St. Mary's Planning Commission which was chaired by Vice-Chairman Joe St. Clair, who did his best to push through a vote in favor of the development. When St. Clair called for a motion to approve the intense development of the farm just north of the intersection of Rt. 242 and Rt. 5, no planning commissioner would make a motion and the matter died.   Attorneys for the developer told the Planning Commission that they had no choice but to approve the development.   County Attorney John Norris countered and told the Commission members that the decision was theirs to make, that is why they were appointed.  Story

Will Fritz contest appointment of Mattingly as Judge?  Only The Shadow knows for sure!

Judge Kaminetz Retiring from St. Mary's Circuit Court; Candidates Seeking Nod Have Until Aug. 15th to Apply

LEONARDTOWN ---  Who will toss their names in the hat to be appointed to the St. Mary's Circuit Court?  The Judicial Nominating Commission makes recommendations to the Governor who makes the appointment of the Circuit Court Judge to replace retiring Judge Marvin Kaminetz. The new judge must stand election in the next regular election.  The inside line on receiving the appointment is Leonardtown lawyer Shane Mattingly, who ran for the House of Delegates twice, first in the Democratic primary in 1994 and then as a Republican in 1998.  Mattingly was elected to the Republican Central Committee in 2002 and has served as Chairman.  Mattingly and whoever else wants to be considered must submit their name to the commission by Aug. 15, 2005. The commission sends a list of nominees to the Governor for his choice and in some cases, the Governor sends the list back until the right name is put on it.  Richard Fritz is likely to make another bid to be a Circuit Court Judge after losing badly in last year's judicial election primary, coming in third in the Republican primary behind two Democrats.  Fritz was thought to be unbeatable against Judge Karen Abrams. Abrams easily dusted her two opponents.  Bryan Dugan who ran second to Abrams is expected to be make another try.  Mattingly is likely to be appointed by Governor Robert Ehrlich and would be in a good position to retain the judgeship when he has to stand election.

Ehrlich Administration Warns
Visitors to MVA of First Amendment

The GOP has a real news shocker for those using the Motor Vehicle Administration facility at Waldorf.  This sign is posted over the newspaper stands near the front door of the large service center where citizens pay large fees, raised to record levels by the Ehrlich Administration, for renewing license tags for vehicles.  The three newspaper machines which are under the sign, are from left to right, The Washington Post, The Maryland Independent, and ST. MARY'S TODAY.  Gee, which one caused the mental midgets running the Ehrlich Administration to put up this sign?  This photo was taken just a few weeks after the Governor canceled his subscription to ST. MARY'S TODAY.
Here is the warning that they should have posted:
Warning, the newspaper on the left is on the far left.  The one in the middle will put you to sleep and the one on the right will rot your brain. You have been warned!

Arson in Accokeek?

ACCOKEEK --- July 19, 2005) PG County fire investigators are gathering evidence that PGFD spokesman Mark Brady reports is "suspicious", from the scenes of two fires which took place around 3:00 am today.  The first fire was reported in a vacant house in the 15900 block of Livingstone Road and the second house to suddenly go up in flames was a new house under construction, also located on Livingstone Road.

Cause of fire blamed on grease buildup in ducts
UPDATE ---WALDORF, MD (July 20, 2005) --  A team of Deputy State Fire Marshals have determined the origin and cause of a blaze that caused an estimated 1.5 million dollars damage to a Waldorf restaurant early Monday morning.  The 5:24 a.m. fire destroyed the Great American Steak and Buffet Company located at 3135 Crain Highway.
The investigation has revealed the blaze began inside ductwork designed to vent grease-laden cooking vapors to the outside of the building.  A build-up of grease accumulated in the ductwork above the ceiling and ignited allowing the fire to slowly heat up the steel ductwork, eventually radiating enough heat to ignite the combustible wood framework of the roof.

--- A fire which began just before daybreak  on Tuesday ended business for the Great American Steak & Buffet, a popular local steak house which featured down home cooking. Maryland State Deputy Fire Marshal W. Faron Taylor reports that commuters on the busy Rt. 301 spotted the fire about 5:30 am and arriving firefighters found heavy smoke in the one-story building located just south of the Rt. 301 / Rt. 5 intersection.
"Heavy cranes are being used at this time to assist investigators in determining the origin of the fire," said Taylor. "We think this began in the ceiling which would point towards a grease fire, but there is no way to determine a cause until the investigation is complete."
Firefighters from all over Charles County rushed to the scene to assist Waldorf VFD and firefighters from three stations in St. Mary's County were used to fill in stations in Charles which were emptied out by the multi-alarm fire.  In all, over 100 firefighters were on the scene and able to bring the fire under control in about thirty minutes.  Damage was set at $1.5 million.
The Great American Steak & Buffet has been open about 8 years on the site of a former 'Po Folks' and enjoyed an extensive clientele who packed the place every day.

Bank Robbers Hid In Ceiling of Bank

WALDORF ---  Two men hid in the ceiling of the Maryland Bank & Trust Company branch on Berry Road, just west of Waldorf, and after the bank closed and two employees were counting money, they jumped down from the ceiling and robbed the bank employees of a sum of money.  One of the desperados proved how macho he was by attacking one of the clerks, a 67 year old woman.  Hopefully he will be caught and sent to the Big House where he may become a target for predator prisoners.

LEONARDTOWN (July 18, 2005) Now here is a crime that the St. Mary's Sheriff's Department can handle...no one, no deputies that is, were ever charged with a crime for stealing a tractor-trailer load of building supplies from the Sheriff's evidence storage but an eager-beaver deputy pounced on a hapless soul who was clearly not smart enough to cross the street at the corner crosswalk.  In making this high-profile collar, Deputy Angela Muller found that this hardened criminal was packing pot and it was off to the slammer for Gregory M. Colbert.  The Sheriff's Dept. reports that Colbert stepped in front of a vehicle without yielding, which, had Colbert been clobbered by the car, is conducive to supplying business to the nearby funeral home, making the deputy's actions out of step with a free market economy.

Cut Throat Bandits
Fleeing Felons From Belk Store in
St. Mary's Nailed by Charles Sheriff's Officers

BRYANTOWN ---  Now on newsstands, get the latest details....Two men fleeing from police in St. Mary's County following an armed robbery were quickly apprehended when they crossed the line into Charles County.  The men had used guns to rob the Belk Store in the Wildewood Shopping Center on Rt. 235 in California according to Leonardtown State Police Barracks Commander Lt. Brian Cedar.
"There were no injuries at the store during the robbery is the information we have at this time," said Lt. Cedar.
Soon after the robbery State Police gave chase and the pursuit went north through Hughesville.
Charles Sheriff Fred Davis said his officers were ready with stop sticks to deploy as the chase came north out of Hughesville and right at Zekiah Swamp, the sticks were rolled out and let the air out of the free-wheeling desperados who were hell bent to leave Southern Maryland.
"No one was hurt, not the officers, not the public and not the suspects," Sheriff Davis told ST. MARY'S TODAY.  "It was a high speed chase which started in St. Mary's and stopped quickly on Rt. 5 in Bryantown, our officers executed the stop sticks and the chase was over."
A report from a witness at the scene said there were about 25 police cars and the Maryland State Police Helicopter involved in the chase and stop.
The Belk store likely didn't have too much cash on hand as most women shop with credit cards and checks but the stupid crooks must not do much shopping or they would have picked a different store.
More details on these Belk Bandits coming up....

Alleged Crack Dealer on Fast Track to Prison After Traffic Stop Reveals Big Stash

SUNDERLAND ---  A lot of white folks who use crack are going to missing one of their favorite crack distributors after Tfc White of the Prince Frederick Barracks stopped Nathaniel Lee Jones, 23, of Huntingtown and spotted a scale on his person.  After the trooper told Jones he was under arrest and to get out of the vehicle, Jones reportedly resisted arrest and was subdued.  An examination of his vehicle revealed 142 grams of crack cocaine and close to $4,000 in cash.  The street value after the crack was sold to local crackheads who, in turn, steal from their families in order to support their habit, is $26,000.  Jones, his cash, his crack and his car were all seized and jailed or stored.
Kids Did Major Damage to Passing Traffic
LUSBY --- With the baddest little heathens in Calvert County living in the St. Leonard area state troopers had to scramble last week to find out which of the heathens were tossing rocks at passing cars and trucks.  State Police report that Tpr. Mounts tracked down the culprits and arrested them, now their parents will have to pay for close to $2,000 in damage to several vehicles.  If you were passing in the area of West End Blvd. and had your vehicle struck by a projectile, call the state police in Prince Frederick to make a report.  The heathens, who are 14 and 15, were released to a parent.
Car Stolen and Torched

LEXINGTON PARK --- An old bad neighborhood which has big plans being made for it continues to be a dumping ground for criminals.  On Tuesday morning a staffer of the old Flat Tops found a car which had been torched, left smoldering on Coral Drive in Lexington Park.  The car had been stolen from Earl and Janine Spicer and had been reported to the Charles County Sheriff's Dept.  Maryland Deputy Fire Marshal Don Brenneman reports that the cause of the fire was incendiary and a $5,000 loss to the 1997 Honda Accord. The fire had burned itself out without being reported to 911 as most residents of that street are now long gone due to the gradual process of relocation in preparation for demolition.
Another Raging Woman Behind the Wheel
Just two weeks ago a 17-year-old girl tried to run another vehicle off the road along 20 miles of Rt.301 before crashing into a tree killing herself and her baby. Now a new incident of a woman hell-bent for fighting on the highway took place near Waldorf in May and an arrest was made this week.   On May 6 at 5:11 p.m., Officer J. Timko responded to the intersection of Walleye and Windowpane courts in Waldorf for the report of an assault. Investigation revealed a 36-year-old Waldorf woman was traveling in her vehicle on Middletown Road near McDaniel Road in Waldorf when another vehicle attempted to cut her off where the two lanes of Middletown Road merge into one. The victim advised the driver of the other vehicle threw unknown objects at the victim's vehicle, made rude hand gestures and began tailgating the victim's vehicle. The other vehicle followed the victim to Smallwood Drive, St. James Drive and Dorchester Circle. When the victim stopped and exited her vehicle at the intersection of Walleye and Windowpane Courts, the other vehicle also stopped and the driver exited the vehicle and assaulted the victim. A witness stopped to assist the victim and the suspect fled the scene.
During the investigation, Officer Timko identified the suspect as Schwanna Lanise Freeman, 30, of Clinton. On July 5, Freeman was charged with second degree assault.

GREAT MILLS (July 11, 2005) ----  A dispute between a couple on Saturday night led to the woman driving off to the Dash In at California and calling police for assistance. When the officers who responded escorted the woman back to her nearby home they found that her husband was in the kitchen suffering from a severed finger.  After severe howling, which was broadcast over police frequencies, the couple made up and the police left.  There was no word about a reunification of the finger and the hand but there was a reconciliation between the man and the woman.  Was it the ring finger?  Only The Shadow knows for sure!

Man Who Fell Off Sportfishing Boat Found Alive While Swimming 4 Miles Out In Atlantic from Delaware Coast

INDIAN RIVER --- The U.S. Coast Guard says that folks who go out in the ocean ought to be wearing life jackets and after an adventure for one man who fell off the sportfisherman 'Hangin Loose', he might agree.  Coast Guard Commander Ron Labreck of the Eastern Shore Group reports that Greg Ryan fell off the boat at about 11 pm Friday while on the way to an offshore fishing ground when he took a tumble which no one noticed.  Evidently it wasn't feeding time for sharks and Ryan took to swimming while his pals called for help and began to look for him.  The Coast Guard sent up two big planes (C-130's), several helicopters and several rescue boats, all to search for a man who was too cool to don a life jacket and too dumb not to hang out on the side of the 'Hangin Loose'. The name of the vessel which found Ryan was the recreational fishing boat, the S.S. Minnow. Ryan told rescuers that he had just began to loose consciousness when he was found.  He was taken to shore in a 21' rescue boat to Indian River Inlet. The Coast Guard recommends that boaters wear life vests with reflective tape when fishing offshore.

WALDORF --- A 39-year-old woman leaving a Waldorf office building located on Rt. 925 in the heart of the Waldorf business district was kidnapped and raped Saturday evening.  The woman was forced by the man into a wooded area near the Hamilton II Center, a new office complex on Old Washington Road next to a large medical center, where she was raped.  The suspect, identified by Charles County Sheriff's Detectives as Michael David Harbin, forced the victim to drive him and his dog to Trumpeter Court and Berry Road where he then fled.  The woman went to a nearby roadway and obtained the help of a citizen who called police. Harbin should stick out like a sore thumb with his mutt and only 180 pounds on his 6'4" frame. Police say he has brown hair and blue eyes. Contact Detective G. Draheim at 301-609-6479 with any tips.
Boozing Bozo Was Driving
ATV Wrong Way on Highway

St. Mary's Sheriff's Dfc. Michael Labanowski was patrolling in Charlotte Hall when he observed a ATV headed northbound in the southbound lanes of Rt. 5.  The winner of this Dukes of Hazzard Moron Award was identified by police as Francis Wayne Bridgett, 41, of Mechanicsville. Bridgett was suspected to be intoxicated, report police, and when told to take a roadside sobriety test, he refused and then beat feet.  This rocket scientist was pursued by the deputy, who is fit and not one of the donut crowd of law enforcement, thus able to capture the fleeing ATV DWI driver. Bridgett was further uncooperative a fought the officer as he attempted to place him under arrest. A bag of pot on his person added drug charges to the long list of charges placed against him.

Call for Boat in Distress Answered by Ridge, Avenue
A sailboat was in big trouble on the Chesapeake Bay just north of St. Jerome's Creek as storms swept the area on Tuesday
RIDGE --- ( July 6, 2005) The Ridge Vol. Fire Dept rescue fireboat assisted a 30' Hunter which ran aground off the coast of St. Mary's County on the Chesapeake Bay. Firefighters from Avenue were summoned to help and the U. S. Coast Guard said that they planned to issue a broadcast to other vessels in the area to assist rather than launch one of their pricy patrol craft to aid the persons on the sailboat. The Coast Guard flubbed a rescue in 1993 of a charter boat and 3 people died.  A commercial towing service was called to pull the stranded sailboat to safe waters after firefighters were able to be sure the single person on board was safe.
