Kid Operating ATV Illegally on
Road Dead After Crashing into Pine Tree

HUNTINGTOWN ---  On Sunday, October 10, 2004 at approximately 2:25 PM a tragic crash occurred in Calvert County.  James Eric Baldwin, 15, of Huntingtown, was operating his Yamaha ATV southbound on Willow Way in the Hunter's Ridge Subdivision, Prince Frederick, Calvert Co., MD.  While travelling at an excessive rate of speed, he failed to negotiate a gradual right curve in the roadway.   Although he attempted to brake, his ATV left the road and travelled onto the grassy roadside.  Due to his speed and the vehicle's characteristics, he was unable to regain control of his ATV and struck a drainage culvert then became airborne and struck a large pine tree.  Emergency Medical Services and police personnel attempted to save Baldwin's life but his injuries were too severe.  He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Excessive speed, driver error and the capabilities of the vehicle involved are the preliminary causes of this tragic crash.  TFC M. L. Davis is the primary investigator.

State Police Barracks Commander Lt. Homer Rich said on Sunday that parents and guardians are reminded that all-terrain-vehicles (ATVs), dirt bikes, motorized scooters (gas or electric), and mini-motorcycles ("pocket rockets") can not be driven legally on Maryland or Calvert County Highways.   Adults need to abide by these laws and ensure that their children do as well.
