Man Rescued, Woman Jumped When
Awakened by Fire from Unattended Food on Stove
HERMANVILLE --- In what started as unattended food cooking on the stove turned into a
harrowing night for a Hermanville family at Southhampton when fire engulfed their
home. John Francis and Barbara Jean Dorsey were awakened in their two story duplex
on Cambridge Avenue by a smoke detector to find their house burning. Barbara Dorsey jumped
out a second story window while John Dorsey was rescued by a hook and ladder truck from
Bay District Volunteer Fire Department. The fire erupted at about 11:14 pm on
Thursday, July 8, 2004, reports Maryland State Deputy Fire Marshal Chuck Dammann. Injured
in the fire was firefighter Nick Stamnos who suffered a cut to his forearm and was taken
to St. Mary's Hospital along with the Dorseys. The Dorseys were being treated
for smoke inhalation and Mrs. Dorsey was being treated for injuries suffered when she
jumped from the window.
