McCaffrey’s World
By
Bill McCaffrey
It was very tragic when Steelers quarterback Ben Roeljlisberger was so badly
injured in that motorcycle accident but hey, he wears a football helmet to
protect his head in a game but won’t wear a helmet when racing down the street
in a big hog. So he belongs one dumb person and I always thought QB’s were
suppose to be smart.
He must have thought about all those pro sports millionaires who saw their pro
careers go down the drain because of foolish decisions like the one he made.
Know it alls like Kellen Winslow, Bobby Hurley, Jay Williams, Casey Rabach, and
a host of others. The pro athletic thinks he’s above it all, he’s infallible,
well guess what he isn’t.
Jim Lonberg won 22 games in 1967 for the Boston Red Sox then went skiing and met
a tree that didn’t know he had just finished a 22-9 season. Then there were
folks who went to war for their country and saw their careers for all purposes
end.
Cecil Travis was a nine year veteran with the Washington Senators with a career
lifetime batting average of .327 before WWII and a sure fire Hall of Famer
before but not after his feet were frozen in the Battle of the Budge! Travis in
1941 (his last before WWII) hit .359 with 218 base hits. His 218 hits were more
than Ted Williams (who hit .406 that season) and Joe DiMaggio (who hit in 56
straight games that season). But for three seasons after WWII the best he hit
was .252 in 1946, a year later Ed “The Walking man” Yost replaced him at third
base.
Think of what Ted Williams would have done if he had those years that he lost
while serving his Country?
You have the good guys and then you have the goofs who think they are above
everyone and oh “It can’t happen to me”, well ask Ben and the others who used a
highway as a sliding board.

DOWNPOUR CAN’T COOL OFF PEHRSON
Not even a mid-game downpour could cool off the hot bat of Big Train designated
hitter Preston Pehrson (Texas) on Wednesday night at Shirley Povich Field.
Bethesda jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on doubles by Cory
Lane (UNC-Charlotte), Steven Leach (Jacksonville State), and Adam Plummer
(Pittsburgh/Johnstown). The Bombers got one back in the top of the fourth on a
lead-off double by Joel Gonzales (Prince Georges CC) who scored. A downpour
halted play for 42 minutes in the fourth. Big Train starter Robby Smithson
(Lipscomb) attempted to come back after the delay but he struggled and was
relieved by Chris Cullen (Michigan State). A defensive meltdown in the fifth
gave the Bombers a 4-3 advantage. The Bombers relief pitcher Mike Castrignano
retired three batters in order in the fourth, but then walked the two lead-off
batters in the fifth. The Bombers threw away an attempted sacrifice bunt to load
the bases for the Big Train’s top hitter, Preston Pehrson. He did not
disappoint. Pehrson launched a moonshot home run over the right field fence to
give the Big Train a 7-4 lead. Leach walked and scored on an RBI double by
Plummer. The Pehrson blast propelled Bethesda back into first place in the first
week of play in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League as the previously
undefeated Rockville Express lost to Silver Spring. Cullen picked up the win,
striking out three and allowing no earned runs in three-and-one-third innings of
relief. Castrignano gave up the grand slam and took the loss.

Big Train Notes: The Montgomery County Public Schools went on summer break
Wednesday, and Shirley Povich Field was the place to celebrate (as long as you
didn’t mind getting soaked by a passing thundershower!). Bonnie Cullison,
President of the Montgomery County Education Association, was on hand to
represent the teachers and throw out a ceremonial first pitch. It was Slide Into
a Good Book night with author and Washington Post kids columnist Fred Bowen.
Free Big Train bookmarks were given to all fans. Librarians from Montgomery
County were on-hand to sign-up kids for the County’s summer reading program. It
was a Washington Parent Night with Moonbounces, Mini-Golf, and Baseball Toss

Co., Ourisman Automotive, and Sandy Spring Builders.
TOO MANY WALKED IN THE PARK TUESDAY
On Tuesday afternoon, the Maryland Redbirds earned their first victory of the
season and handed the Big Train its first loss of the season, 6-3. The Redbirds
got clutch hits in two big innings that ultimately doomed the Train and ended
the win streak. The first rally came in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Redbirds shortstop, Brian Schweers (Virginia Wesleyan) led off with a base hit
off Big Train starting pitcher, Evan Frederickson (Virginia Tech). The Big Train
starter walked the next three batters to force in one run. After striking out
the next batter, the Redbirds catcher, Nachion Moore (Radford) smacked a line
drive double into right-center field that cleared the bases and put the Redbirds
up 4-0.
The Big Train answered with one run in the top of the fifth after shortstop
Steven Leach (Jacksonville State), who went 3-4, RBI, and a run scored, started
the inning off with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by second
baseman, Cory Lane (UNC-Charlotte). The rest of the Big Train scoring came in
the sixth on an RBI double by right fielder Luke Adkins (Southern Mississippi)
and an RBI single by Leach. But it wasn’t enough as the Redbirds extended their
lead with two runs off relief pitcher Austin Hinkle (Coastal Carolina) in the
sixth. After the game Manager Sal Colangelo spoke with the team. “I told them
from day one that if they throw strikes that 90% of the time we will the
ballgame, but the Redbirds played well and they cashed in on our mistakes. They
deserved to win.” Combined, Big Train pitchers allowed eight walks and gave up
five hits. Dan Oleynik (Salisbury) picked up the win for the Redbirds, allowing
just two earned runs in six innings of work.
Bethesda Big Train (3-1) 0 0 0 0 1 2 0 0 0 — 3 8 1
Maryland Redbirds (1-3) 0 0 0 4 2 0 0 0 x — 6 5 0
WP: Oleynik (1-0)
LP: Frederickson (0-1)
Save: Zaccaria (1)
2B: Moore (MR); Adkins (BBT)
Attendance: 52
Time: 2 hours, 12 minutes
Big Train Notes: The Big Train played as the visiting team as the game had been
postponed from Monday because of wet field conditions at Bachman Park.
SEVEN PLAYERS return from last year’s Big Train team. They include Adam Redd, a
Virginia Tech senior who played a different position each inning in a Big Train
exhibition game last Saturday. Bethesda seeks a three-peat season, although some
qualifiers are necessary. The Big Train won the 2004 Griffith League
championship, and last year was co-champion along with Silver Spring-Takoma in
the inaugural season of the Cal Ripken Sr. League. Since its inception, the Big
Train has been run as a nonprofit organization. Proceeds benefit the Bethesda
Committee Base Ball Club, has raised more than $300,000 to restore baseball and
softball fields throughout the Washington, D.C. area since the first Big Train
season in 1999. The three Ripken League teams in Montgomery County (Rockville
and Silver Spring-Takoma) are based on the same nonprofit model as Big Train.
This year, the Ripken League will have the same six franchises that it had last
year. That will change, said Alex Thompson former Big Train general manager and
now the Ripken League’s executive director. “We won’t be expanding this season,
but we are certainly looking to expand to eight, 10, or even 12 teams in the
next few seasons.”
One of the goals, said Thompson, is to make the Ripken League a destination for
Maryland vacationers. He points to the Cape Cod League, one of the premier
collegiate summer baseball leagues, which attracts all types of vacationers, not
just the baseball fanatics. ”We have two phenomenal cities that are our anchor
base [and] we have all these great things that make Maryland a destination,”
Thompson said. “I think it’s a natural fit.”
BAYSOX REPORT
‘SOX COME OFF IN EIGHTH, BEAT PORTLAND, 8-4
Baysox Beat Sea Dogs For First Time This Season
Wednesday evening the Baysox and Sea Dogs played a much closer game than the one
a night previous. Both teams were deadlocked at four through seven frames of
baseball but this time the home team would pull away in the 8th inning and never
look back as the Baysox outhit and outscored the visiting Sea Dogs for the first
time this season.
Fresh off an eight inning shutout, James Johnson went just six innings but gave
up home runs to both Luis Jimenez and Brandon Moss. The New York native only
struck out one batter, uncharacteristic of his outings but tonight Johnson had
some run support.
Portland’s Jimenez hit a solo shot to lead off the 2nd inning and Moss added his
solo shot in the 3rd for a two run lead. But Bowie narrowed the lead in the
bottom of the 3rd . After singling up the middle, Ryan Hubele scored from second
compliments of a Gera Alvarez singled into left field.
Portland, however, came back with two in the 4th as they got they loaded the
bags with the first three batters and scored on a sac fly and a bases loaded
walk to jump the lead to 4-2 in favor of the visitors.
But the Baysox bullpen would hold the Sea Dogs at four runs while their offense
kept scoring runs. Pete Shier smacked the first pitch he saw in the 5th inning
into left field for a double and scored on Tony Alvarez’ successive RBI single.
Alvarez moved to second on a two out Leo Daigle single and scored from second on
two wild pitches thrown by Sea Dog starter Luis Mendoza.
Bowie struck again in the 7th for one more insurance run. Cory Keylor reached on
a fielding error as Portland’s SS David Bacani got underneath Keylor’s pop up
but dropped the ball in the infield. That would prove very useful as the
right-fielder would end up scoring on two singles off Portland reliever Randy
Beam. Beam was replaced by Jonathan Searles in the bottom of the 7th with two
outs and got Tripper Johnson swinging to end the threat. However, after holding
Portland to no runs in the top of the 8th the home team unleashed on the Sea
Dogs bullpen.
Hubele led off with his second single up the middle of the game, stole second
and was knocked on a Tony Alvarez ground rule double into right center. Gera
Alvarez knocked in Tony with a single into shallow left field that Bacani laid
out for but was deep enough to send a moving Tony Alvarez to the plate from
second base. After Searles was replaced with Mike Bumatay Keylor drew a walk,
Daigle singled Keylor to second and Noah Hall plated the Ohio grad on the Baysox
16th hit of the ball game. Daigle was thrown out trying to reach third base on
the play to end the inning.
Portland brought up their 2-3-4 hitters but Baysox closer, Marino Salas, shut
the door on all threw getting Moss to fly out to left, caught Chad Spann looking
and blew strike three right past Jimenez with an 92 mph heater to end the ball
game and secure the Baysox 28th victory of the year in front of 1,770 fans.
ON DECK: Thursday night will be the rubber match of the series between the two
teams. LHP Richard Stahl will look to escape out of his seven game losing skid
and RHP Kason Gabbard, the Sea Dogs best pitcher will seek to ensure that does
not occur. Game time is set for 7:05 pm.
WE GET LETTERS…
Bill,
Thanks Bill, just sent Jimmy a post updating him about Donnie and Mo Mirman a
few others. We played in the 53 All High All Prep game and won 6 to 5. Believe
he was named the outstanding player in that game.
John
Dear John,
You guys were great.
Bill
Uncle Bill -
Did you see that fight? That was a great fight - selfishly I’m sorry to see
Bernard retire. Emanuel Stewart stated on the night of the fight that he’s been
telling Bernard for years that he’d be great at light heavyweight.
This is actually probably the best for Hopkins - he seems to still have most of
his wits, he can avoid the duhhhh factor as he ages, he will help many young
fighters be their absolute best and he’ll hopefully help bring respect to the
ring.
Bill
Dear Bill,
Great fight! A little closer I thought than the judges cards showed.
Bill
Bill,
Hopkins has a great will to win, however is not on my list of great
middleweights. Try Robinson (the best) Ray Leonard would have found a way to
beat Hopkins, although 160 wasn’t his best weight,Tony Zale, Marcel Cerdan. As
for light heavy’s Charles, Bobby Foster were better. Foster probably the hardest
hitter the division ever had. He was ill advised to move up to heavyweight,
couldn’t take the punishment from the big boys.
Jim
Dear Jim,
Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest fighter, pound for pound, ever to climb into
the squared circle.
Bill
Bill,
I still think Tarver won that fight, and certainly didn’t lose by that lopsided
a margin. Maybe that’s why they don’t pay me to judge prize fight.
Jim
Dear Jim,
I like Hopkins but like you I didn’t think it was that lopsided.
Bill
Dear Bill,
Would You Be So Kind To Include The Ehs Reunion Announcement In Your Column &
E-Mail Address List.
We Will Send You An Announcement In First Part Of July, September & October.
We Are Looking Forward To Meeting You At The Reunion. You Will Be Receiving A
Reunion Reservation Form In Mid July.
Thank You So Much For Your Help!
God Bless,
Jo Ann & Clarence Nordan
Bill,
Think Pat misses Magic, Kareem and Worthy? Mechanics aren’t worth a s— without
their tools.
Jim
Dear Jim,
You bet!
Bill
Bill, don’t know if Jimmy sent you this or if I did. ha Anyway here it is
John, thought you might get a hee haw. Bert Sugar and me at the reunion of the
Wilson HS city championship football team of 1952 taken in Oct. of 2004.
Herzbrun and Sommers are still patting themselves on the back. Hard to put up
with those clowns. They were pretty good though, I have to admit. Kicked the
crap out of my boys at Griffith Stadium to win the championship.
Jim
Bill,
Think Pat misses magic, Kareem and Worthy? Mechanics aren’t worth a s… without
their tools.
Jim
Dear Jim,
You bet!
Bill
Bill,
Veep of my last two years of high school classes is enough for me. Thanks for
the thought though. I was president for 7 years of the Orange County Rush
Limbaugh Fan Club from 94 to 2000. Met all sorts of neat people and high
politicians and talented individuals. Sean Hannity is my favorite talk show
host. Guess you found me out.
Ruthie
Dear Ruthie,
You are the greatest. You always were first class and a real Bethesda Beauty.
Bill
Bill,
I know you’ll find this hard to believe, but I totally agree with you in regard
to Steve McNair and the Ravens. As a devoted Ravens fan, I sense this marriage
between “Airless” and the Ravens is headed for a quick divorce. Whether anyone
likes Kyle Boller or not, it’s not the kid’s fault he spent more time on his
back than a “Vegas Brothel Bunny” last season. McNair will fair no better behind
Baltimore’s porous offensive line.
In fact, McNair has been quite vulnerable to injury and ache the past three
seasons. One subject that I would like to hear your input on is in regard to the
handling of Boller in this fiasco. As all of us know, the Ravens have been
trying to land McNair for the past few months. Let’s face it; Kyle Boller knows
this has been going on.
I’m not so naïve to consider the NFL a game; it’s a business. However, Boller
has done all that he is capable of doing. He’s given 100%. He’s lifted his
carcass off the field after being plastered, he’s practiced hard, AND he’s faced
the media in the locker room after every game (the same cannot be said for
“Raghead”). Unfortunately, Boller is not talented enough to be a top line, NFL
starting quarterback.
That said, he is good enough to be a serviceable #2 slinger in this league for
many years to come. However, given the treatment he’s received by the Baltimore
fans, who demand the rein carnation of Johnny Unitas to walk on the field, and
the Ravens brass in this latest debacle, Boller will seek fairer treatment in
2007. Oh, and by the way, McNair is not the answer. I’m glad to see we are
thinking in harmony.
Rex Snider
Dear Rex,
Good report!
Bill
