McKay Letter
to Supporters
(This letter was sent by St. Mary’s Commissioner President Tommy McKay to his
campaign supporters after his son was charged with counterfeiting money)
Dear Friends,
There is an issue I want to make sure you are aware of before you read about it
in the paper. Last Friday my son Eric was charged with counterfeiting.
Apparently without his knowledge a friend used his computer and scanner to
produce a few $20 bills.
Eric was not involved in attempting to pass any of the fake currency and
I am confident that as the legal process plays out, it will prove he is innocent
of the charge.
My main concern is for Eric and his well being.
Thank you for your continued support.

Sheriff Says Assault at Benedict Marina
Being Thoroughly Investigated
To the Editor:
I am writing in response to the letter “A Call to a Community for Justice,”
which appeared in the June 4 edition of The St. Mary’s Today. The writer was
concerned about the Charles County Sheriff’s Office’s investigation of an
assault at Benedict Marina on May 21.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene at 12:31 a.m. for
the report of a fight. An investigation revealed a 34-year-old man was assaulted
by three suspects as he exited the bathroom inside the establishment.
Investigators spoke with the victim, who did not know the identity of the
suspects and could not advise a motive for the attack. They also spoke with
several witnesses at the scene who could not identify the suspects. The victim
was flown by helicopter for treatment of his injuries. The officers left the
scene about an hour later with the information they obtained for the police
report.
The writer claims to not have knowledge of any police officer attempting to
investigate the incident and is concerned because the information has not
appeared in any newspapers. The writer also alleges a “cover-up” because of
information indicating the suspects could be members of the Benedict Volunteer
Fire Department and Rescue Squad. These are the issues I would like to address.
First, I can assure you this incident is being thoroughly investigated. There
are two officers who have continued to follow up on information and leads in an
attempt to identify the suspects. I can not discuss the specifics of their
investigation at this point because it could compromise their efforts. However,
I am compelled to defend their actions because I know they are working hard on
this case. Contrary to the statements made in the letter, the officers did
return to Benedict Marina and they have been to the Benedict Volunteer Fire
Department as part of their investigation. My Agency has also been in contact
with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office as well because some of the individuals
involved in this case reside in Calvert County.
Secondly, the writer expressed concern regarding the information not appearing
in the newspaper. Our Public Information Office distributed a news release to
the local television news, radio stations and newspapers last week. It also
appears on the Sheriff’s Office Web site. The release did not discuss any
suspect possibilities because that could harm the investigation. It also did not
discuss any witness information, as is typically the case. It did appeal for
additional information and offered a Crime Solvers reward, which is offered in
all criminal investigations.
Finally, I want to address the allegations of a “cover up” because the writer
has heard rumors that the assailants are members of a fire department and rescue
squad. As I stated before, no one at the scene could provide information about
the identity of the suspects other than a physical description. The officers are
making every attempt to identify the assailants who committed this attack and
are following up on every lead they receive. They will charge the suspects with
this crime regardless of what organizations they are affiliated with.
I want to assure the writer, your readers and our community that this case is
being handled with the same diligence and integrity as every investigation of
the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. We never ignore a call for justice.
Frederick E. Davis, Sheriff
Charles County, Md.
