Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Plans "Luau" with Invite to Teens
MECHANICSVILLE ---  Over the years the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department, covering the northern section of St. Mary's County from Chaptico to Golden Beach and down to Sandgates, has responded to the scene of many horrific crashes where they needed to use the Jaws of Life to cut open wrecks so rescue personnel could then prepare the persons inside for airlift to a shock trauma center.

In many cases, the valiant efforts of the Mechanicsville VFD were not enough as those inside the wrecks had already died.

But year after year, the volunteers get up in the middle of the night, in the middle of dinner or in the middle of work and run to answer the call of saving lives.

This weekend, life will be different for the volunteers.

They are sponsoring a "North End Luau", as if they were the old beer joint of the Charlotte Hall House of Ribs days where a bunch of folks would get together to drink too much in the hot sun and then leave to add mayhem and mischief to area roadways, perhaps even traffic fatalities.

Two weeks ago a beer bash held by the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department with an ad for the event promising $1 draft beer also promoted the inclusion of teenagers.  A person was stabbed in a fight that night as the department noted it's 75th Anniversary of saving lives in the area.

The Mechanicsville Volunteers are advertizing a BYOB event and welcome the inclusion of teens from the age of 16 and older.
