Fatal College Park Fire Under Investigation

COLLEGE PARK --- At about 2:30 AM, Tuesday, January 24, 2006, Prince George’s County Firefighters and Paramedics from the College Park area were alerted for a fire in an off-campus apartment building near the University of Maryland.  The apartment building is located in the 7100 block of Rossburg Drive, just 2 blocks south of the main campus.  Firefighters arrived at the 2-story brick, with basement; six-unit apartment building with smoke showing from the rear of the building, smoke was coming from a basement apartment.  Firefighters from the College Park Fire/EMS Station 12 initiated an interior attack on the fire and a simultaneous search and rescue of the burning apartment.  A 23 year-old-male was found in a bedroom, unconscious and non-breathing; he was removed from the building by firefighters and transported to an area hospital by paramedics performing advanced life support measures.  Despite efforts by paramedics and emergency room staff the adult male was pronounced deceased at the hospital.  A roommate of the deceased was returning home and saw the apartment on fire.  The roommate, a 21 year old male, attempted to enter the burning apartment, however was driven back by the thick smoke and intense heat.  He sustained minor smoke inhalation injuries, transported to an area hospital, treated and released.  There was a smoke alarm present in the apartment of origin, however, it was not determined if the smoke alarm activated.  Seven occupants, all students at the University of Maryland, of the other apartments will be displaced and stay with family and friends.  Prince George’s County Fire Investigators have determined the cause of the fire to be “Under Investigation”.  Fire Investigators will wait until autopsy results before releasing the cause of the fire.  Fire loss is estimated at $30,000.  Fire officials identified the dead student as David Ellis, 23 year-old-male, Senior year at the University of Maryland and a resident of W. 42nd St. in New York City.
