Gail Irvine Wood
Gail Irvine Wood, 62, of California, MD died Saturday, December 30, 2000
at her home in Wildewood. Born on September 17, 1938 in Neptune, NJ, she is the daughter
of Ethelyn Virginia Irvine of Freehold, NJ and the late Kenneth C. Irvine. Ms. Wood
attended Freehold High School and went on to Arizona State University at Tempe, AZ, where
she earned a degree in education. During her 26 year teaching career, she educated 4th and
5th graders in Oakville, Greenview Knolls and Lexington Park Elementary School. She
enjoyed traveling, stamping up and other crafts. She also enjoyed showing her Australian
Cattle Dog, Torri, throughout the East Coast. Ms. Wood was a member of the Australian
Cattle Dog Club of America and Therapy Dogs International. She was also a member of the
Reformed Church of Freehold, Freehold, NJ. She is survived by her mother, Virginia Irvine
of Freehold, NJ, one son, Randall Jay Wood, of California, MD, one sister, Karen I.
Campbell, of Howell, NJ, a granddaughter, Jessica Lyn Wood, of California, MD and two
nephews, Ian and Keith Campbell, of Howell, NJ.. Friends may call on Thursday, January 4,

Greenwell
Benedict Joseph "Ben" Greenwell, 56, of Lexington Park, Maryland died on
Saturday, December 9, 2000 in Hughesville, Maryland.
Born on April 20, 1944, he was the son of the James Combs and Genevieve Norris
Greenwell. Ben had operated the Sign of The Whale liquor store in Lexington Park for 25
years. He is survived by his wife, Pamela, four daughters; Jessica, Genevieve, Catherine and
Carole, and three sons; James, Jonathon and Ben. He is survived by 11 siblings: Mary Combs
McCarthy of Oklahoma City, OK, Kitty Lee Hurry Radford of Leonardtown, JoAnne Choporis of
Compton, James Greenwell of Middletown, OH, Genevieve Norris of Leonardtown, Jefferson
Greenwell of New Carrollton, Rose Wilson of Leonardtown, Frank Greenwell of Arlington, VA,
Sybil Costanzo of Springfield, VA, Carole Wible of Hollywood and Elizabeth Matthews of
Bryantown. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 17, 2000 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00
p.m.at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A.in Leonardtown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated on Monday, December 18, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Aloysius Catholic Church in

Norman Frank Kraft
Norman Frank Kraft, 80 of Piney Point, Maryland, died at St. Marys Nursing
Center in Leonardtown, Maryland on Monday, December 11, 2000.
Born on March 24, 1920 in Washington, DC, to the late Norman Andrew and Etta Mae
Dunkley Kraft. Mr. Kraft moved to St. Marys County in 1975 from Prince Georges
County. He was a Police Officer for the Metropolitan Police Department retiring after 28
years on the force. Mr. Kraft was a member of the Masons Lodge #227 in Camp Springs,
MD; he was also a member of the Association of Retired Police Officers of Washington, DC.
and the VFW of the U.S. McKimmie-Catterton-Police-Fire Post # 2979, Inc. Mr. Kraft is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Verna Swift Kraft of Piney
Point, MD, whom he married on April 20, 1940 in Washington, DC. Three sons, Roger William
Kraft of Piney Point, Maryland, Norman Charles Kraft of Bethesda, Maryland and Stephen
Edward Kraft of Ellicott City, Maryland. One brother Charles Andrew Kraft of Edgewater,
Maryland. Preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Lusk. The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, December 13, 2000 from 4 to 8 pm in
the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. with prayers being

Born on April 23, 1921 in Ridge, Maryland, he was the son of the late James Irving and
Kathryn Fredrika Mayor Wood. Mr. Wood was a bus driver. Mr. Wood is survived by sisters and brothers; Lorraine Polly Bean of Callaway,
Maryland, Irvanette W. Hall of Park Hall, Maryland, Eileen Hall of Great Mills, Maryland,
Louise Combs of California, Maryland, Charles D. Wood, Jr. of St. Marys City,

Mary Thelma Wathen, 88, of Leonardtown, Maryland, died on Tuesday, December 5, 2000
at St. Marys Nursing Center in Leonardtown, Maryland.Born on April 20, 1912 in Compton, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Parren
and Amanda Dury Crain. Ms. Wathen was a life long resident of St. Marys County. She
was a homemaker. From 1959 until 1980, she worked as a cashier for Dukes restaurant
in Leonardtown, Maryland. She enjoyed playing cards especially pitch.Ms. Wathen is survived by a daughter; Judith "Judy" W. DiGiovanni of Bel
Alton, Maryland, two sons; Theodore "Teddy" Richard Wathen and Kenneth
"Kenny" Lawrence Wathen, a sister; Leila Rogers, all of Leonardtown, Maryland,
five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Ms. Wathen was predeceased by her

Steven Kenneth Matthews-Bull, 46, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, died at St.
Marys Hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland on Tuesday, December 5, 2000.
Born on October 8, 1954 in Jamestown, New York, to Paul Roy and Nancy Latricia Erhart
Bull of Busti, New York Mr. Bull moved to St. Marys County from Hatfield,
Pennsylvania. He was a consultant for the U.S. Government for 19 years, he served in the
U.S. Navy. Mr. Bull is survived by his wife Cheryl Jayne Matthews-Bull, they were married October
26, 1985 in Oaklyn, New Jersey. Four sons, Glenn Austin Bull and Gregory Robert Bull both
of Sumpter, South Carolina, Steven Jake Matthews-Bull and Kenneth Ryan Matthews-Bull both
of Mechanicsville, Maryland. Two brothers Walter L. Bull of Topsham, Maine and John Bull
of Columbine, Colorado, and one sister Katherine A. Bull of Jamestown, New York. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the

Diane Marie Velasquez- Riordan, 48, of St. Marys City, Maryland, died at
Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC on Saturday, December 2, 2000. Born on January 14, 1952 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Jesse C. and Vera Coronado Velasquez
of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mrs. Riordan attended St. Margarets Academy: in
Minneapolis, Minnesota she was a 1978 graduate of the University of
Minnesota earning a
Bachelors Degree in Science. She moved to St. Marys County in 1985. Mrs.
Riordan was the Manager of the Visitor Center at Historic St. Marys City and the
Manager of Farthings Ordinary. Mrs. Riordan is survived by her husband Timothy B. Riordan, whom she married on June
11, 1977 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Two sons Timothy P. Riordan and Phillip T. Riordan
both of St. Marys City, Maryland also survive her. Two Brothers Thomas E. Velasquez
of Bloomington, Minnesota and Jerry A. Velasquez of Irvine, California. Also survived by
many aunts, uncles and cousins. Family and friends will be received Wednesday, December 6, 2000 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6

Morgan of Mechanicsville, MD. He was the brother of Frank Barber and Jane Russello both of

Francis DeSales Mattingly, 82, of Leonardtown, MD died Monday, December
11, 2000, in the Washington Hospital Center.
Born on June 18, 1918 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of the late William D. and
Agnes Mattingly. He was the beloved husband of Ellen M. Mattingly whom he married on
November 24, 1945 in Leonardtown, MD. He was the father of Inez M. Frazier of Alexandria,
VA, Sue "Frannie" Hilsinger of California, MD, Roger Mattingly of Leonardtown,
MD, Roy Mattingly of California, MD, and the late Philip Mattingly. He was the brother of
Lucille Juenger of Philadelphia, PA, Maryann McCurdy of Kissimee, FL, and the late Bert
Mattingly, Cathell Mattingly, Pansey Campbell, Mary Spates, Rose Mattingly, Clarke
Mattingley, and Clement Mattingly. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren. Mr. Mattingly was a lifelong resident of St. Marys County. He retired
in 1975 after working as a mail carrier with the U. S. Postal Service. He served in the U.

Agnes Theresa Higgs Ford, 93, of Lexington Park, MD died Saturday, December 9, 2000
following a lengthy illness, at the home of her daughter Mary Berenice Fairfax.
Born on August 23, 1907 in Medleys Neck, MD, she was the daughter of the late
Thomas Emanuel and Florene Lucretia Bowles Higgs. Mrs. Ford was a lifelong resident of St.
Marys County. She was a homemaker and avid gardener, and devoted her life to caring
for her extensive family. She also assisted in running the St. Marys County Alms
House on Route 5 across from the County Fair grounds until it closed. She was preceded in
death by her husband, George Ignatius "Nace" Ford, Sr. and her sisters Helena C.
Armstrong and Frances A. Wiltrout. Mrs. Ford, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great
Grandmother and Great, Great Grandmother is survived by daughters Agnes F. Kerig of
Ventura, CA, Catherine Ann Stone of Park Hall, MD, Mary Berenice Fairfax of Lexington
Park, MD and son George I. Ford, Jr. of Suffolk, VA. She is also survived by her sisters,
Alice Estelle Woodburn of Leonardtown, MD, Mary Berenice Ferguson of Louisville, KY, Mary
Eva Abell of Medleys Neck, MD, Charlotte Ann Metzger of Waldorf, MD, Rebecca F.
Shaulis of Rockville, MD and brother Thomas E. Higgs of Medleys Neck, MD. Mrs. Ford

Hospital. Born on May 27, 1937 in Solomon's, Md. she was the daughter of the late Joseph Kenneth
and Indiana Florist Mason Elliott. She was the loving wife of the late Howard Ralph Wood
whom she married in Baltimore, MD on October 8, 1955. He preceded her in death on June 13,
1998. She was the devoted mother of Howard R. "Chip" Wood, Jr. of Sudlersville,
Md, Roderick Wood of Annapolis, Md., Charlene Fowler of Chestertown, Md, Craig Wood, Bruce

Ruth Agnes Peacock Stone of Park Hall, MD died on December 4, 2000 at her home.
Born on August 12, 1925 in Lexington Park, MD she was the daughter of the late Eugene
and Cora Peacock. She was the loving wife of the late Ernest L. Stone, Jr. whom she
married on December 15, 1946 in St. Michaels Catholic Church. He preceded her in
death on July 4, 1991. She was the devoted mother of Jean Nial, Diane Windsor, James Stone
all of Park Hall, MD and Lois Rayburn of Nebraska. She was the sister of the late Beatrice
McKay, James Peacock, Lucille Gatton and Thomas Peacock. She is survived by 13
grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Mrs. Stone attended St. Michaels School.
She was a homemaker and worked several years with her husband at the Southern States Store

Abell, Sr. and Jane Loretta Wible Abell. She was the loving wife of the late William
Richley Norris. She was the devoted mother of William Richley "Dickie" Norris,
Jr., John Abell Norris, Catherine Dolores Wheeler, Robert Bernard Norris, Charles Joseph
Norris, Elizabeth Jean Guy all of Hollywood, MD, Philip Norbert Norris of LaPlata, MD and
George Franklin Norris of Mechanicsville, MD. She is the sister of Loretta Goldsborough,
Martha Johnson both of Hollywood, MD, and the late Manning Abell, Vivian Abell, Bert

Loveville, MD and the late Robert William Guy. He was the loving husband of Karen Ann
DeRosa Guy whom he married October 12, 1974 in St. Josephs Catholic Church. He was
