Regina Barbara Heinze
Regina Barbara Heinze, 47, of Lexington Park,
Maryland, died on January 24, 2001 at Washington Hospital Center.Born on February 10, 1953
in Berlin, Germany she was the daughter of the late Karl Friedrich Willi and Irma Anna
Marie Schidzick Heinze. Ms. Heinze moved to St. Marys County from Georgia in 1976.
She was a waitress at Rosies Restaurant. She enjoyed sewing and decorating. Ms. Heinze is
survived by 4 brothers, Horst, Detlef, Artur and Wolfgang Schidzick all of Germany and
dear friends Tanya Rosado, of Lexington Park, MD, Michael Irvine, of Radford, VA, Rose and
Tex Turner of Lexington Park, MD and co-workers form Rosies. Services were private.

Brooklyn Marie Cusic, twin infant of James Kenneth
and Kelly Marie Couch Cusic of Mechanicsville, died on Sunday, January 28, 2001 at Civista
Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. In addition to her parents, she is also survived by
twin sister, Destiny Marie Cusic and older sister, Angelica Marie Cusic, both of
Mechanicsville, Maryland, maternal grandparents, Janice and Jerry Couch of Washington, DC,
paternal grandparents, Mary Catherine and Charles Cusic, also of Mechanicsville. A
Graveside will be conducted today, Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Charles

Lucie Ann Dunbar Abell, 88, of Mechanicsville,
Maryland, died on Sunday, January 28, 2001 at her residence. Born December 20, 1912 in
Dameron, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Paul Waldron and Lucy May Beale
Dunbar. She is survived by J. Frank Abell of Mechanicsville, MD, four daughters, Lois Ann
Abell Fowler of Hughesville, MD, Diane Dunbar Abell Delahay, of Leonardtown, MD, Sara Ann
Abell Brown of Roseville, CA and Faye Cecilia Abell Reid of Waldorf, MD., one sister
Marion May Dunbar Sterling of Compton, MD, 12 grandchildren , 13 great-grandchildren and 1
great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Edna Dunbar and two
brothers Alexander Beale Dunbar and Paul Waldron Dunbar, Jr. Mrs. Abell was a life long
resident of St. Marys County. She lived in Mechanicsville for 60 years moving from
the 1st District and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St.
Marys Garden Club, Antique Arts Association, St. Marys County Retarded
Association and the Catholic Daughters.Family and friends will be received on Wednesday,
January 31, 2001 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in
Leonardtown, MD, with prayers recited at 8:00 p.m.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be

Grace Lola MacEwen Hawes
Grace Lola MacEwen Hawes, 87, of Leonardtown,
Maryland, died on Sunday, January 28, 2001 at St. Marys Hospital, in Leonardtown,
Maryland.Born January 21, 2001 in Glyndon, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late
Walter Dyer and Grace Mildred Eppley MacEwen.Mrs. Hawes was the wife of William E. Hawes
of Leonardtown, MD, whom she married August 18, 1935 in Bethesda, MD, beloved mother of
Celia Hawes Taylor of Leonardtown, MD. Marc Hawes of Helen, MD. survived by one brother
Walter D. MacEwen of Owings Mills, MD she was preceded in death by a daughter Patrice
Hawes Walton two sisters, Roma Cate, Helen Custer and one brother, Lloyd MacEwen, also
survived by eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hawes moved to St. Marys County 33 years
ago from Landover, MD, formerly employed with the Department of the Treasury as an
Assistant Secretary and Peoples Drug Stores. She was active in volunteer and civic
associations throughout her life. Mrs. Hawes had a life long love of art, she volunteered
at P.G. Hospital teaching patients art she also volunteered for the Boy Scouts, she
enjoyed art teaching, dancing, music and gardening, treasured by all who knew her.
Family and friends will be received Wednesday, January 31,
2001 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD with a
Funeral Service Held at 11:30 AM in the Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Samuel C.
Walker, Sr. of Christ Episcopal Church will officiate. Interment will be private. In Lieu

Dorothy Mae Rusaw, 77, of Mechanicsville, MD died on January 30, 2001 in St. Marys Hospital.
Born November 19, 1923, she was the daughter of John William Hall and Gladys Mae
Cheseldine. She was the loving wife of Mearland Joseph Rusaw, Sr.

Dorothy S. "Dot" Sminkey,
67, of Leonardtown, MD formerly of Somerdale, NJ died on January 29, 2001 in St.
Marys Hospital. Mrs. Sminkey was born on May 6, 1933 in Atco, NJ. She was the loving
wife of Robert Loys Sminkey whom she married on November 18, 1950 in Laurel Springs, NJ.
She was the devoted mother of Robert L. Sminkey of Summerville, SC and Sue Drew of
Beverly, MA. She was the sister of Donna Shannon of Erial, NJ, Charles Goodman of Orlando,
FL, John Goodman, Joseph Goodman both of Little Rock, AR, James Goodman of Depford, NJ and
Mary Hunger of Blenheim, NJ. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jonathan and
Kimberly Drew. Mrs. Sminkey moved to St. Marys County in 1990. She was a homemaker
and a genealogist. Mrs. Sminkey was a member of D.A.R., St. Marys County
Genealogical Society, and a Librarian at LDS Library, California, MD in Genealogy. Friends

Margaret Susan Eisgrau
Margaret Susan Eisgrau of Newport
News, VA formerly of Lexington Park, MD died on January 28, 2001 in the Mary Immaculate
Hospital in Newport News, VA. Born August 11, 1916 in Rhode Island, she was the
daughter of the late Timothy OHearn and Alice Cullen OHearn. She was the
loving wife of 48 years, to the late Alexander Eisgrau. She was the devoted mother of
Ellen Raffetto and her husband Thomas Raffetto, of Yorktown, VA. She was the sister of the
late James J. OHearn. She is also survived by her grandson John Raffetto and wife
Stephanie Raffetto of Arlington, VA and grandson Peter Raffetto of Portsmouth, VA. She was
preceded in death by her granddaughter Susan C. Raffetto. Mrs. Eisgrau moved to Lexington
Park, MD in 1949 where she lived until 1996. She served for many years as a clerk of the
Civil Court in St. Marys County. Throughout her life she was active in local schools
and the parish of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, where she volunteered with Catholic
Daughters of America and Ladies of Charity. She was an active member of the Lions
Club, and was recognized by the Southern Maryland Tri-County Community Action Committee
for her 20-year commitment to serving the poor and elderly through the Life Support

US Navy Vietnam War Veteran
Thomas Patrick "Tom" Hormuth, LCDR, USN (ret) 61, of Mechanicsville,
MD, died on Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at St. Marys Hospital, Leonardtown, MD. Born on April 22, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Elmer Patrick
and Klare Kress Hormuth. Mr. Hormuth served in the United States Navy from 1968 until
1987. He received the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit
Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces
Expeditionary Medal Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy "E:, Good Conduct, Vietnam
Campaign and Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Valorious
Unit Citation. He joined Jorge Scientific Corporation in April 1996 as a Senior Logistics
Manager providing logistics support to the Sparrow Air-to-Air Missile program at the Naval
Air Systems Command on Patuxent River Naval Air Station.He is survived by his wife, Sandra Louise Henninger Hormuth, whom he married on January
8, 1966, two sons; Brian Patrick Hormuth and Marc Patrick Hormuth of Virginia Beach, VA, a
daughter-in-law, Kelley Hormuth of Virginia Beach, VA, two grandchildren; Aaron Patrick

2001 at her residence. Born June 24, 1911 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late William Ford and
Ella I. Bowles Nelson. Mrs. Sullivan moved to St. Marys county 23 years ago from
Clinton, Maryland, she was a homemaker. In May 1979 she was preceded in death by her
husband Joseph Francis Sullivan, Jr. Mrs. Sullivan is survived by her son David J. Sullivan of Wichita, Kansas, by two
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, she was preceded in death by a brother Thomas

he was the son of Mulry J. Thompson of Piney Point, MD, and the late Ethel Mae Hern
Thompson. Mr. Thompson moved from Arlington, Virginia to St. Marys County 23 years
ago. He was an electrician and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, crabbing, gardening and
cooking. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife Margaret Evelyn Knezovich Thompson whom he married
on August 11, 1944 in Washington, DC. , one son, Joseph M. Thompson, III of Piney Point,
MD, three daughters, Jane Ann Nau of Leonardtown, MD, Carolyn Cullison of Piney Point, MD
and Mary Lou Burke of Arlington, VA, a brother Donald Thompson of Ashburm VA, sister

Thursday, January, 11, 2001 at his residence.Born September 15, 1970 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Dr. Kannarkat P. Verghese
and Dr. Annie P. Verghese of Leonardtown, Maryland. Dr. Verghese was a graduate of Eastern
Virginia Medical School and a Post Graduate in Dermatology, at Howard University in
Washington, DC. He moved to the St. Marys County area in July 1977, and resided
until to June 1988 and then returned again in September 2000. Dr. Verghese is survived by his siblings David Verghese, JoJo Verghese and Nina

Sheldon George Russell "Captain Shell", 83 of Piney
Point, MD, died on Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Washington Adventist Hospital in
Tacoma
Park, MD. Born on February 2, 1917 in Tall Timbers, MD, he was the son of the late George W.
Russell and Sarah Shorter Russell. Mr. Russell served in the U.S. Army during World War
II. After being honorably discharged he went to work for the public works department at
the Patuxent River Naval Air Station for a short while. Mr. Russell was a boat captain for
over 50 years, he fished, crabbed, clammed and oystered the Potomac River and the
Chesapeake Bay. He also worked for Stewart Petroleum County in Piney Point. He was a
lifetime member of St. Georges Episcopal Church. Mr. Russell is survived by his wife, Winifred C. Abell Russell of Tall Timbers, MD,
three daughters, S. Eleanor Strickland of Great Mills, MD, Shirley W. Dorrel of Broomes
Island, MD, Patricia A. Morris of St. Inigoes, MD, two sons, Sheldon C. and Walter T.

Delores May VanSteenburg, 68, of Great Mills, died on Monday, January
8, 2001 at St. Marys Hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland. Born March 12, 1932 in
Detroit, Michigan, mother of five children and ten grandchildren. She was loved and
respected by all who knew her. She drove a school bus for twenty years at the Gladwin
Michigan Public Schools while married to her first husband, Raymond Brown. She was a
teacher aide and school bus driver for Queens Creek Arizona School system for eight years
until forced into retirement by heart problems. She was an active member of Metropolitan
Community Church of the Chesapeake. She loved to sew and quilt and was a member of
Quilters By the Bay, the Pax River Quilters Guild and the Thursday Seniors Sewing
Club. Surviving family in the order of birth are as follows: Nancy and her husband, Raymond
Robinson, their children Sarah, Alex, Jacob, Kevan and Lucas of PawPaw, Michigan; Gerald
Brown and his wife, Anne, their two children Josephine and George Anne from Leavenworth,
Kansas; Cindy and Linda, Charlie and his wife, Bertha, their two children Christopher and
Heather from Brunswick, Maine; and Terry and Jewell and his son, Derrick from Chandler,
Arizona. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Pratt of Detroit, Michigan and nephews,
Jimmy, Johnny and Randy. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, January 11, 2001

Eckard. Ms. Funk moved from Florida and has lived in this area since 1990. She worked in
Shenandoah Hospital in Woodstock, Virginia for eight years in Food Service and also was a
member of the Ladies Auxiliary in Strasburg, Virginia. Her favorite flower was a yellow
rose. Ms. Funk is survived by a daughter; Shirley Ann Mason of Winchester, Virginia, a son;
Donald Byers of California, Maryland, a sister; Dorothy Arrowood of Sebring, Florida, a
brother; Raymond Eckard of LeBelle, Florida, eight grandchildren, and fifteen great
grandchildren. She is predeceased by a daughter; Kay Francis Miller and a brother; Richard
Eckard. Family and friends will be received on Saturday, January 6, 2001 from 3 - 6 p.m.
at The Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650.

p.m. at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, Virginia where a Funeral Service will be conducted
at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be following at Panorama Memorial Garden, Front Royal,

Andrew Paul Toth
Andrew Paul Toth, 86, of Piney Point, MD died on January 11, 2001 at
his home. Born November 6, 1914 in Pottstown, PA., he was the son of the late Andrew Toth and
Barbara Undo Toth. He was the brother of Helen Wasko of Pottstown, PA., and the uncle of
Frank Toth of Piney Point, MD. Mr. Toth was a cook and bartender, an avid fisherman, and
enjoyed playing cards with his friends. Visitation for Mr. Toth will he held on Sunday, January 14, 2001between the hours of
1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home.
Charles Ernest "Tootsie" Morris
Charles Ernest "Tootsie" Morris, 88, of Abell, MD died on
January 3, 2001 in St. Marys Hospital. Born September 21, 1912 in Abell, MD he was the son of the late Foster and Frances
Geneva Ellis Morris. He was the loving husband of R. Thelma Thompson Morris whom he
married in Holy Angels Catholic Church. He was the devoted father of Mary O. Tucker of
Avenue, MD and the late James F. Morris. He was the brother of Dora Gibson of Abell, MD,
Eunice Guy of Loveville, MD, and the late Earl Morris, Frank Morris, John Morris and
Bernard Morris. He is survived by 1 grandchild and 2 great grandchildren. Mr. Morris
