Mary
Klear (Bell) Miles, 77
St. Mary's Clerk of the Circuit Court,
Register of Wills
Mary Klear (Bell)
Miles, 77, formerly of Leonardtown, MD died on Friday, January
23, 2004 at her residence in California, MD.
Born on January 14, 1927 in Leonardtown, MD, she was the
daughter of the late John Gilbert and Jane Paul Abell Klear. She
was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, was the Register of Wills
for St. Mary’s County from 1962 until 1977 when she was
appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary’s County to
succeed Dorothy Bailey Kucher. She ran and won election in 1978
and became a political powerhouse in the county, one of the
first women to do so. She ran again and won in 1982 and 1986,
deciding not to run again in 1990.
As Clerk of the
Circuit Court, she made housecalls, performing weddings at any
location in St. Mary’s County where people wanted to get
married. She reformed record keeping in the courthouse, opened
up records for after hours and weekend work for research.
As Clerk of the
Court, Mary Bell Miles emphasized customer services and began
first modernization. Her appointment as Chief Deputy, Evelyn
Arnold, who had been Chief Deputy prior to her taking office,
succeeded her as Clerk and still holds the office, while Arnold
has taken the Clerks Office into another century with more
access to records than ever before, a development which would
have really pleased Mary Bell.
A strong believer
in God, Mary carried over her personal beliefs to everyone she
met with inspiration rarely seen in a public official and
maintained that she was an old fashioned "people’s Democrat" who
looked out for the little guy.
Mary was first
active politically in the early 1960’s in the Young Democrats,
later was president of Democratic Club, member of the Catholic
Daughters and member of the United Woman’s Democratic Club State
of Maryland.
She married
George C. Miles on November 21, 1987. They made their home in
Ocala, FL.
She is survived by her sisters, Rose Theresa Clements, Shirley
K. Hunt and a brother, George G. Klear all of Leonardtown, MD,
four step children, George Miles of LaPlata, MD, David Miles of
Accokeek, MD, Michelle Wills of Port Tobacco, MD and Lynn Merlin
of LaPlata, MD. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, a
grand nephew and step grandchildren. In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Miles, a
sister, Anna Sarah Strine and a brother, Frank F. Klear.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 31, 2004
at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Leonardtown, MD at 10:30 a.m.
