Officer Shot Armed Carjacker After Thug Took Aim
 

 

       FORESTVILLE --- The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a Departmental Shooting that occurred on Sunday, June 20, 2004  in Forestville, Maryland.

Police report that at approximately 6:00 a.m., Prince George’s County police officers were dispatched to the 3200 block of Walters Lane for a carjacking.  Preliminary investigation revealed that three suspects approached the victim while at a BP gas station.  The suspects assaulted the victim before taking his vehicle. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.   A lookout for the suspects and the carjacked vehicle was broadcasted over the police radio.  The officers spotted the vehicle in the area of Pennsylvania Avenue and Donnell Drive.  A short vehicle pursuit ensued, which ended in the 3200 block of Forest Run Drive.

The first officer confronted the passenger of the vehicle who was armed with a handgun.  The passenger got out of the vehicle and raised a handgun toward the officer.  The officer, fearing for his safety, discharged his weapon and struck the passenger in the upper body.  The passenger was transported to a local hospital. 

A second officer pursued the driver on foot into a wooded area. Upon being confronted by the officer, the driver displayed a handgun and fired at the officer.  The officer returned fired, however the driver was able to elude capture.  A search of the area for the driver yielded negative results. It is unknown if the driver was injured.

The third suspect in the carjacking was not seen in the vehicle at the time of the pursuit.  A handgun was recovered from the scene.

The involved officers are assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau and will placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
