Old Guys Held With Drugs
LOVEVILLE — Two men in their 50s were allegedly held with mind-destroying drugs past midnight Friday after St. Mary’s Sheriff officers saw them acting in a suspicious manner. On Friday at 1.34 am, Dfc. Elizabeth Trossbach observed a vehicle parked near the front doors of the Third Base Store in Loveville. Dfc. Trossbach observed two subjects acting in a suspicious manner and approached them.
Upon making contact with the driver of the vehicle, she detected the odor of burnt Marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of suspected Marijuana and Cocaine.
The driver of the vehicle, Steven P. Yates, age 55, of Mechanicsville and the passenger in the vehicle, Thomas L. Thompson, age 52, of Mechanicsville were placed under arrest and charged with Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Cocaine, and Possession of CDS Paraphernalia. Both Subjects were shifted to
the St. Mary’s County Detention Center pending a Bond Hearing before the
District Court Commissioner.
Child hurt in ATV wreck, flown to Washington DC
LA PLATA — An eight-year-old boy lying on the edge of the street injured after an all-terrain vehicle crash was flown on chopper to Washington DC, Charles County Sheriff’s officers said. They aid on Jan. 26 at 3:50 pm, they responded to the 9500 block of May Day Street in La Plata on a report someone had been injured on an all-terrain vehicle and found the wounded child.
Investigations revealed a 13-year-old girl was driving the ATV with the victim and another passenger, age 9, onboard from their bus stop to their home. The victim was standing on the floorboard on the left side of the ATV when he lost his balance and fell to the pavement. Neither the driver of the ATV nor her passengers were wearing helmets. The hospital reported that the victim was in stable condition. Officer D. Baker is investigating.
Woman in Stolen Car Visits Hotel St. Mary’s
LEONARDTOWN — On Friday, January 6, Maryland State Trooper M. Moore stopped a vehicle for a cracked windshield and no front tag, on Route 5 at Abell Street in Leonardtown. A check through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) showed the tag displayed had been reported stolen. An MVA check indicated the vehicle was unregistered. The driver, Zita Michelle Holly, 37, of Mechanicsville, was arrested and charged with theft. She was taken to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.

One Had Marijuana
LEONARDTOWN — Two males who allegedly hid a stolen registration plate in the back of a pickup truck were nabbed on Monday, January 9, one of them for possession of marijuana, after Maryland State Police said they received a tip-off. TFC L. Nims responded to Washington Street, Leonardtown, on a complaint. A witness said the suspects left in a Ford Taurus after hiding the tag. Nims looked in the back of the pickup and located a Virginia tag between two crates. A check through NCIC indicated the tag had not been reported stolen. The Taurus returned and the driver, Michael Alan Knott, 56, of Callaway, was contacted.
Knott advised he gave the tag to a friend. A check through MVA showed Knott’s driving privilege was suspended and revoked. He was arrested and charged with driving while suspended and revoked. Ronald Wayne Edwards, 48, of Tall Timbers, who was with Knott at the time was contacted. During conversation, an odor of burnt marijuana was detected on his clothes. A search of the vehicle was conducted and a bag of marijuana was found in the glove box. Edwards was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of CDS Paraphernalia. Both, Knott and Edwards were taken to the Hotel St. Mary’s (County Detention Center).
Hit & Run Solved
LEONARDTOWN — On Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at 8:25 pm, Cpl. J. Vanhoy arrested Robert Alan Lagana, 41, of Leonardtown, on a Charles County District Court warrant for a hit and run accident. Lagana was held at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.
Woman Arrested After Passing Out at Home
HOLLYWOOD — A woman who had allegedly passed out after consumption was arrested from the stairs of her home, according to the Maryland State Police. On Friday, January 20, 2006 at 6:00 pm, Tpr. K. Shughart and TFC L. Nims responded to Mt. Pleasant Road, Hollywood, to check the welfare of a female lying face down at the bottom of the stairs. The female, Jennifer Susanne Eyler, 33, of Hollywood, was unresponsive on their arrival. While awaiting the arrival of the ambulance, a search for identification was conducted. Located in Eyler’s purse was cocaine and several CDS smoking devices. Eyler finally began to speak and advised she fell asleep. When the ambulance arrived, Eyler refused to go to the hospital for treatment. Eyler was arrested and charged with Possession of Cocaine and Possession of CDS Paraphernalia. She was taken to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and held pending a bail review.
Man Killed in Two Car Crash
WALDORF — A man died after a two-car wreck at Huntington Circle near Heathcote Road in Waldorf. Charles County Sheriff’s department said on Jan. 24 at 1:56 pm, a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Michael Lee Payne, 24, of Waldorf was traveling north on Heathcote Road when the vehicle crossed the center line. It struck a 1990 Toyota Corolla traveling south on Huntington Circle and being driven by Jemmott Glenaster Harris, 61, of Waldorf. Harris and Payne were both transported to Civista Medical Center, where Harris was pronounced dead a short time later. Speed and driver error are believed to be factors in the crash. Cpl. S. Burrows of the Traffic Operations Unit is investigating the crash.
Traffic Violation Yields Stolen Vehicle
PRINCE FREDERICK —- A vehicle was recovered a day after it was stolen from Doug Dorsey Used Cars. On January 12, the owner said the vehicle had been parked behind Ralph’s Dodge, Prince Frederick and on the following day at 2:15 am, Rt. 2/4, Lusby, TFC Whipp stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. A computer check revealed the vehicle as the one stolen that was stolen from the used cars lot. Paul Anthony Pitner, 21, of St. Leonard who was driving the car was arrested. After processing, Mr. Pitner was incarcerated in the Charles County Detention Center to await a commissioner’s hearing.
Juvenile Vandal Arrested
OWINGS —- On a complaint of disorderly conduct, Maryland State Police TFC White was dispatched to Simpson Farm Rd., Owings on January 22 at 12:27 am. White said he observed a street sign lying in the intersection of Mt. Harmony Rd. and Simpson Farm Rd. Investigation revealed that a 15-year-old male, of Chesapeake Beach, was allegedly responsible, and he was placed under arrest at that time for destruction of property. After processing, he was released to a parent.
More than Dozen Held In Waldorf Sweep
WALDORF — The Charles County Sheriff’s Office served more than 20 warrants between 4 pm and midnight on Jan. 25 during a successful warrant sweep conducted in Waldorf and the western area of Charles County.
More than a dozen people were arrested in the operation. Eighteen officers from the Judicial Services Section, the Tactical Response Squad and the Maryland State Police and two correctional officers participated in the sweep.
Police served 16 district court warrants, seven circuit court warrants, three criminal summons and an out-of-county warrant. The warrants were for thefts, assaults, traffic violations, child support violations, narcotics violations and contempt of court charges.
Anyone who has information about a wanted person should call the Warrant Fugitive Unit at 301-392-3065 between 8 am and 4 pm or 301-932-2222 during other hours.
Robbers Escape with Shotgun
MARBURY — Robbers threw a rock through the window of a side door on a residence in the 4300 block of Creeds Mill Place in Marbury to gain entry to the premises, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. Once inside, the suspect stole a shotgun and a PlayStation 2 from a bedroom and fled the scene. The robbery occurred sometime between 5:30 am and 2:30 pm on Jan. 25. A neighbor reported seeing a suspicious vehicle in the area between 10 am and 12 pm, but police are unsure if it is related to the burglary. The vehicle is described as a small, green, newer-model passenger car. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Department at 301-743-2222. Officer R. Gilroy is investigating.
83-year-old Woman Hurt in Car Wreck
WALDORF — A senior woman driving her car failed to yield the right of way and received incapacitating injuries, according to Charles County Sheriff’s Department. They said on Jan. 24 at 3:08 pm, a 2005 Toyota Corolla driven by Joan Marguerite Goggi, 83, of White Plains attempted to turn left onto St. Patrick’s Drive from Smallwood Drive West in Waldorf but failed to yield the right of way to a Ford E250 traveling east on Smallwood Drive West. The driver of the Ford, Monte J. Tasker, 48, of La Plata, was not injured but Goggi sustained incapacitating injuries. She was flown by a Maryland State Police helicopter to Prince George’s Hospital Center. Officer J. Cooney is investigating.
