ONE DEAD IN CHESAPEAKE BAY BOAT FIRE

BALTIMORE - One person was killed today after a fire occured during a refueling attempt involving a small outboard dingy connected to a 38-foot sail boat in the Chesapeake Bay.

The Coast Guard was notified shortly after 3 p.m. of a boat fire on-board the sailing vessel Vision Quest's dingy, and two confirmed people in the water. Coast Guard crews from Stations Annapolis, and Curtis Bay were dispatched.

Upon arriving to the scene, crews confirmed a fire onboard the dingy, and one person still on-board the sailing vessel. The fire was later extinguished. Both persons in the water were rescued by a nearby good samaritan vessel, and taken to Chester Hospital, where one was later pronounced deceased.

The Coast Guard sends its thoughts and sympathies to the families of the deceased during this difficult time.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters that accidents can occur at any time while underway, and having proper safety equipment such as lifejackets, marine band radios, and EPIRB devices greatly enhance the chances for survival in the event of an unforseen accident.
