One Man Found Dead, One Missing When Sunken Boat is Found
Pair had been ferrying boat south to Florida

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. - The Coast Guard and N.C. Wildlife Resources commission are investigating the deaths of two boaters found in South River south east of Oriental, N.C., today.

The bodies of Sam Puleo, a Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., resident was found near the mouth of the South River last night while the body of Jim Surfice, 55, a Englewood, Fla., resident was also found at the mouth of the South River this morning.

Coast Guard rescue crews from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., Station Fort Macon, N.C. and Station Hobucken, N.C., were joined in the search for the missing boaters by the North Carolina Marine Patrol, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Department Dive Team, the Carteret County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

The 35-foot Sportfisher boat that the two men were delivering from Edenton, N.C., to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was found near the Neuse River Light # 7 in approximately 18 feet of water.

On Wednesday, Station Hobucken responded to a mariner's report of a sunken vessel near light #7 marked with a life ring or lifejacket. The Station responded to the report and was unable to locate the reported sunken vessel. The vessel was found by searching aircraft today.

The accident is currently under investigation.
