POPE JOHN PAUL II NAMES AUXILIARY BISHOP TO ASSIST CARDINAL McCARRICK;

BISHOP OLIVIER RETIRES

 WASHINGTON, D.C.  --- Pope John Paul II today named Rev. Martin D. Holley, 49, a priest of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, to assist Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick in leadership of the 550,000-member Archdiocese of Washington, according to Susan Gibbs, public affairs representitive for the Archdiocese of Washington.

" The Holy Father also accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Leonard Olivier, SVD. Bishop Olivier, 80, had served in Washington for nearly 16 years and, until his retirement, was the senior active Catholic bishop in the United States," said Gibbs in a press release.

 Bishop-Elect Holley will be ordained an auxiliary bishop of Washington on July 2. He currently is serving as pastor of Little Flower, a diverse parish in Pensacola, Florida.

 Cardinal McCarrick will introduce Bishop-Elect Holley to area Catholics today, and will recognize Bishop Olivier for his many contributions:
