Rosa Bryan Hewlett, known to her nieces and nephews and many others as “Aunt Babes”, peacefully and quietly departed this life on Monday, January 10, 2005, at the St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, Maryland.

Rosa was born on June 29, 1912, in Scotland, Maryland to the late Edward C. and Rosa Bryan. She was first baptized at St. Peter Claver Church, St. Inigoes, Maryland. On July 14, 1936, she married Raymond Hewlett and became a lifelong member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Scotland, Maryland, where she served as an Usher and member of the Women’s Society.

Rosa worked at the Scotland Beach Hotel at Point Lookout for many years and later at St. Mary’s College when it was known as St. Mary’s Female Seminary. Around 1941, Raymond and Rosa opened and operated Hewlett’s Store, in Scotland, a small grocery and general store, entertainment center and a great social meeting place for the community. She said “I think that’s the first place I started dancing myself”, and most of us also learned to dance right there. After Raymond departed this life in 1963, Rosa continued as the sole proprietor of the store until her retirement in 1991.

In addition to her parents and husband, Rosa was pre-deceased by four sisters – Myrtle Bush, Hattie Watts, Grace Lee and Ellouise Barnes, and four brothers – Edward, James, Robert and Joseph Bryan.
