Drive in window at the Sugar Shack for local lawmen
Lazy deputies tie up to feeding station without getting out of their "Gator".  No wonder the St. Mary's Sheriff's Dept. appears to be populated by out of shape law officers.
Why weren't deputies assisting people in crossing Rt. 5 from the school parking lots instead cruising the fairgrounds in this Gator like the deputies from the Dukes of Hazard?

Zylak Broke Law When Using Sheriff's Dept. Equipment for Campaign
Sheriff Dave blew it when he sent out an announcement to the media this week, using Sheriff's Dept. computers and email to tout his time in office and to ask for votes.  Any use of public property assigned to the Sheriff's Department for personal or political use is illegal under Maryland law.
This first step in his campaign for another term is yet another stumble, much like his first step when taking office when he immediately asked the St. Mary's Commissioners for a major and five captains.  Between asking for an expanding budget, raises for his wife and yet failing to take any action to curb violence at the area's hell-hole bars or traffic gridlock, Zylak once again has made a blunder.  Zylak and his wife have roamed the halls of the sheriff's headquarters cornering deputies to seek their support for another term in office. See details in print edition this weekend.

McKay Casts Only Vote Against Spending State Surplus on Education
At a meeting of the Maryland Association of Counties last week, St. Mary's Commissioner Tommy McKay, representing the Board of Commissioners, voted against a MACO resolution which urged the Governor to spend most of a billion-dollar surplus on education.  The vote was 23-1. McKay ignored a prior vote of the St. Mary's Board on the issue which supported the move by MACO and contravened the will of his board to advance his own view.

Deputies Collar
Armed Robbery Suspect

After a two-week search for a man wanted in Charles County for an armed street robbery, St. Mary's Sheriff's deputies were led on a chase back and forth across Great Mills Road.  The suspect, shown above being frisked for weapons by Deputy Charles Earle, ran from officers who spotted him near a home on Essex Drive in Patuxent Park.  The man darted down towards the car wash and then across Great Mills Road, back behind the A & E Motel and then in the woods behind the Burger King, Deputy Mark Smith put an end to the fleet-footed escape.  Shown at left is Deputy Corcoran while Cpl. Katherine Dassing is at right.  Charles County Sheriff Fred Davis told ST. MARY'S TODAY that the capture was welcome as armed street robberies are a serious crime, just as much as robbery of a store.

Hughesville Mayhem
A four-vehicle collision at mid-day Monday set the pace for this week's diet of mayhem and mania.  So far this year, 30 people have died on Charles County roads and the Rt. 5 passage through Hughesville is deadly due mostly to driver error and speeding nitwits.  This crushed car contained one trapped person who was extricated and flown to a shock trauma center.
