SMVFA awards it's own at the Annual 57th Convention

Awards were given out during the day, to include Fire Prevention and EMS Awareness, Hall of Fame inductees, Safety Award and President's Award. These awards were given out to show the appreciation to each indivual and department for the contributions they have made over the past year.

Fire Prevention awards were given to Ridge Volunteer Fire Department for the Class I - Year Around entry and Bel Alton/Cobb Island/Newburg Volunteer Fire Departments for the Class I-A - Special Project.
For Class II - Year Around award, Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department and
EMS took this award.
In Class III, Indian Head Volunteer Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad took both awards for Year Around (Class III) and Special Project (Class III-C)
In Class IV, Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department took the Year Around (Class IV) award while St. Leonard Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company took the Special Project (Class IV-D) award.
In Class V, Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department, shared the Year Around award (Class V), while Bay District Volunteer Fire Department walked away with the Special Project (Class V-E) award.
EMS Awarenss Awards were given to Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad for Class IV Year around, and Class IV-D - Special Projects.

The Roland B. Duke Memorial Fire Prevention Award was given to the department determined as the Best Over All Fire Prevention Program for 2003. This award was given to the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Special Judges Awards were given to Harold Younger of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department for "Continued Commitment to his Community - 2003". Another award was given to Scott Best of the Ridge Volunteer Fire Department for "Up and Coming - 2003".

The W. David Gott Memorial Fire Prevention Award for 2003 was given to Captain Jeffery Williams of the Indian Head Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

The Frank R. Cotrufo, Jr. Memorial Safety Award for 2003 was given to Joseph Zienda, Safety Officer at the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department.

This years SMVFA President's Award was given to Father Aloysius T. Newman - Chaplain of the SMVFA and Assistant Chaplain of MSFA.

Mechanicsville VFD wins Best Appearing Company Overall in Annual Parade

The 57th Annual Parade comes as a big success. The weather held out for all of the Volunteers, as they enjoyed the day displaying their pride in the parade and games. The parade was led by the new SMVFA President John O. Gatton, Jr. of the Hollywood VFD.

Mechanicsville VFD appears with Best Appearing Engine 1250 GPM, Best Appearing Squad, 2nd Best Appearing Marching Unit - Fire Department and 2nd Best Appearing Fire Prevention Queen to claim this top award. Other winners include Bay District VFD for the Best Appearing Company in Association, and Patuxent River NAS to claim Best Appearing Company Out of the Association.
