Troopers, Deputies Set Up Enforcement
Activities to Keep Kids Safe as School Returns

LEONARDTOWN ---  There are at least a couple dozen police cars out on school bus routes with various forms of enforcement starting today and perhaps lasting several more days as part of a special action designed to force compliance with traffic laws as school buses return to the roads for the first week of school.

Police will be employing various methods, including laser speed traps, pickup trucks and vans and hiding behind other vehicles waiting for motorists who fail to stop for a school bus stopped to pick up or discharge kids on their way to and from school.

Any motorist who approaches a school bus stopped with it's flashing red lights has to stop for the bus whether or not the motorist can actually see the child boarding.  As long as the red lights are flashing, all traffic must come to a standstill.  On highways where there is no median strip, traffic from each direction must stop.  Only on a divided highway with a median can traffic on the opposite side of the road continue without stopping.

Those who witness speeding vehicles passing stopped school buses should try to get the tag number and phone it in to 911.
