BRYANS ROAD --- On March 7 at 12 a.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to Lamont’s Place at 4400 Livingston Road in Bryans Road for the disorderly crowd report. While officers were en route, a lookout was broadcast for two vehicles involved in the incident. Officer M. O’Shields located one of the vehicles in the 3300 block of Livingston Road and conducted a traffic stop. Investigation revealed the driver, Barry Edwards, 29, of Temple Hills, and his passenger, James Ronell Davis, 30, of Washington D. C., were in possession of suspected marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a loaded magazine for a handgun and an undisclosed amount of money. Edwards and Davis were charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Narcotics Production Equipment. They are being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending appearances before the District Court Commissioner. Officer O’Shields investigated.

 

 

WALDORF --- On March 6 at 2:56 a.m., Officer D. Sauve was traveling east on Berry Road near Bunker Hill Road in Waldorf when he struck a 4-by-6-inch sign pole, which appears to have been placed across the lane intentionally. At approximately 12:20 a.m., a citizen called the Sheriff’s Office to report a mailbox and a pole lying in the middle of the roadway on Berry Road. Maryland State Police responded to the call. At 1:36 a.m., another citizen reported she was driving on Berry Road when her vehicle struck debris in the roadway, causing a flat tire. An officer checked all of Berry Road but was unable to locate any debris. The Sheriff’s Office also received a call for teen in the woods near the area, however they were not located. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at 301-932-7777. Officer D. Sauve is investigating.

 

INDIAN HEAD --- Sometime between 10 p.m. on March 1 and 6 a.m. on March 2, suspect(s) stole a vehicle from a residence in the 200 block of Blair Road in Indian Head. The vehicle was recovered in a wooded area near Riverwatch Drive in Indian Head prior to being reported stolen. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at 301-743-2222.

Trouble Getting Around on Mysterious Errands With Motorcycle Stolen
RIDGE --- On 03/14/05 St. Mary’s Sheriff’s DFC Eric S. Walker reports he responded to Point Lookout Road in Ridge for a reported theft. Alan Dean reported that 1985 Kawasaki motorcycle and a Honda 4 track 250 was stolen from his residence within the past month.
Heathens Like Predator
HOLLYWOOD --- Cpl. Jeffrey McLane of the St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Department reports that on 03/15/05 DFC Emory Johnson responded to Three Notch Road, Hollywood for a reported theft. Christopher Bailey reported that between 03/10-15/05 unknown persons stole his Polaris Predator ATV four wheeler from his residence.
News Shocker of the Week: Local Man Arrested for Drunk Driving!
CALIFORNIA --- On 03/16/05 at 1:00 am, St. Mary’s Deputy Terry Kile stopped a white Chevrolet
pickup truck on Three Notch Road in the area of Laurel Glen Shopping Center. The truck was displaying Maryland passenger car tags. The driver was identified as Charles Rodger Wathen, according to police who determined that Wathen had been drinking. Deputy Kile conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Test which Wathen failed. He was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI. It was also discovered that Wathen had an outstanding warrant from the Maryland State Police. The Maryland State Police served that warrant. Perhaps the police should clear sober drivers from area roads, it would take less manpower.

Probation Violation Alleged

HOLLYWOOD --- On 03/09/05 Deputy Terry Kile served two criminal summons on Benjamin
Dermaine Hebb. The criminal summons charge Benjamin Dermaine Hebb, 28 of
Hollywood with Violation of Probation. The summons set his hearing dates
fro the violations.

"Laffon" at Charges

MECHANICSVILLE --- On 03/09/05 Deputy Terry Kile served a criminal summons on John Paul Laffon III. The criminal summons charges John Paul Laffon II, 19 of Mechanicsville with possession of CDS- Marijuana. The summons was obtained by Deputy Kile after the vehicle John Laffon was stopped for a traffic violation and the driver was found with marijuana.

Daddy Couldn’t Show, Already in Jail?

HOLLYWOOD --- On 03/09/05 SDFC Gene Hill served an arrest warrant on Christopher Eli Carotenuto, 25 of Hollywood. The warrant charges Carotenuto with Failure to Appear for Child Support Hearing. He was incarcerated at the Calvert County Detention Center.

Heathens Abscond with Truck

LAUREL GROVE --- On 03/07/05 St. Mary’s Deputy Gene Hill reports he responded to Laurel Grove Court, Mechanicsville for a reported theft. It was reported by Gene Beall that his 1999 gold GMC Pickup truck, bearing Maryland tags 91F155 was stolen while he was at work.

Police Say No Show

VALLEY LEE --- On 03/08/05 DFC Patrick Handy served an arrest warrant on Mark Wayne Williams. The warrant charges Mark Wayne Williams, 37, of Valley Lee with Failure to Appear for District Court on 03/03/05. He was incarcerated pending his appearance in District Court.

Relax Inn Preferred to Hotel St. Mary’s

LEONARDTOWN --- On 3/08/05 Deputy Terry Kile and TFC Wesley Goldston responded to the Relax Inn, Leonardtown for a possible wanted person. The officers located Randy Scott Carpenter, 41, of Mechanicsville in room 14 of the Relax Inn. Carpenter was arrested without incident and charged by Deputy Kile with Escape for Failing to report to the Detention Center after being sentenced in 2004 to 10 days incarceration. TFC Goldston served a bench warrant on Carpenter for Failure to Appear on a Driving While Suspended charge.

A Bad Night Got Worse

ST. MARY’S CITY --- On 03/08/05 DFC Eric S. Walker stopped a vehicle for speeding on Rt. 5 in St. Mary’s City. At the time of the stop he discovered that the driver was an unlicenced juvenile. A juvenile female from Waldorf, 16, who was a passenger in the vehicle had been drinking and was issued a civil citation for a juvenile in possession of alcoholic beverages, she was released to her Aunt. The adult and owner of the vehicle, Roland Ronte Short, 24 of Waldorf had been drinking was issued a citation for contributing to the delinquency of a minor (furnishing alcohol to a minor). The driver refused to sign the citations, she was arrested and charged with driving without a license, speeding and refusing to sign the citations. She was released to her mother from Waldorf.

38 Businesses Comply with Tobacco Sales Law

During the month of February Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Dept. along with the assistance of several underage confidential informants conducted a Tobacco Compliance Operation. The operation was funded by a Tobacco Prevention & Cessation grant provided to the Sheriff’s Office by the St. Mary’s County Health Department. In
the Tobacco Compliance Operation 87 businesses throughout St. Mary’s County were checked. Of the 87 businesses checked only 38 refused to
sell tobacco products to the underage informants.

Of the other 49 businesses, where the sale of a tobacco product was made, 26 businesses failed to ask for I.D., 22 businesses checked I.D. and still made the sale and 1 business checked the I.D. as well as asked the underage informant their age. Even after the clerk looked at the I.D. and was told by the informant they were under 18 years of age the clerk still made the sale.

The businesses that failed the compliance checks were given warnings and will be provided educational materials to review with their employees. Another round of Tobacco compliance checks can be expected within the next two months.
