Two Fatal Incidents Mar First Weekend in June for Calvert

On June 3 at 7:10 in the morning, members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to Maryland Avenue in Port Republic for the report of a child pinned between two cars.  Upon arrival, deputies found a 10-year-old boy had been run over by a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.  The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene and investigation revealed that the 10 year old sustained fatal injuries when he was helping two adults push his mother’s car backwards.  The car was being pushed because the reverse feature in the transmission was not working and the car had stalled.  The weight of the vehicle caused the child and two men to lose their footing in the gravel driveway.  The child, Louis A. Gross, III, of Port Republic, was killed and one of the men was slightly injured.

On June 3 at 8:35 a.m., members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit, along with F/Sgt. Todd Ireland and Dfc. Paul Wood, were called to respond to the scene of a serious crash at MD Route 4 and Brick House Road in Dunkirk.    Investigation revealed that a 1990 Buick, operated by Charlotte Grierson, 68, of Dunkirk, failed to yield the right of way when making a left turn from Brick House Road onto southbound MD Rt. 4.  A Cadillac, operated by Dennis Trudo, 59, of Huntingtown, traveling northbound struck the Buick in the driver’s door.  Grierson was flown to P.G. Hospital Center where she succumbed to her injuries.
