Waldorf Man Dead in Crash

AVENUE --- On 02/28/04 at 5:30 a.m., St. Mary's Sheriff's Deputies responded to the scene of a single vehicle traffic accident on Colton's Point Road in the area of Oakley Road in Avenue.
DFC Donald R. Poole's investigation revealed that a 1999 Dodge
Caravan operated by Herman Lee Benton, 54, of Waldorf, was traveling
northbound on Colton's Point Road just south of the Seventh District
Volunteer Rescue Squad, when the vehicle drove across the southbound
lane and off the southbound roadside. The van then struck a ditch
causing it to overturn into a field, ejecting the driver. The driver was
transported by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital where he was pronounced
deceased. Police say that there is no evidence of the crash being alcohol related. But until a chemical test result from the autopsy is obtained in approximately three weeks, no definitive assessment can be made.
