Why should a church be allowed to use a school building for services?

To the Editor:

I would like to know why St. Mary’s County allow a church to hold Sunday services at an Elementary School in Mechanicsville. I do not want to hear the County state that it is because it is a weekend. This is County property regardless of what time of day it might be as well as what day of the week it is. This should be stopped as once and an alternate site should be made available to them.

(Editor's Note: By what rule or law would you use to support your view that citizens of this county would be denied the use of a county owned building when it is not being used and is otherwise empty as long as that access is fair and open to any person or group and as long as the use is compensated.  For your information, this access is guaranteed by law and court rulings on the matter.  If you are simply against religious groups, you'll just have to pray that the law of the land will change. )

Compensated Use Should Be Equal for All
To the Editor:
The use of public buildings for private meetings should be acceptable, as long as appropriate rents are paid and all groups are allowed equal consideration (buildings and utilities are not free).  Perhaps the use of otherwise vacant public space will generate sufficient revenue so that "the government" will not stick their hands deeper into our pockets.
