Why Won't County Enforce Sign Ordinance on McKay?

(This letter was sent to St. Mary's County Government and a copy sent to ST. MARY'S TODAY)

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is a formal complaint concerning two of the McKay political signs recently seen in the St. Mary’s county area:

  1. A recently erected sign (Monday) on RT235 northbound lane across from DJs Sonoco Station in Mechanicsville, MD.  Mr. McKay is well aware of the 32 square feet restriction for signs.  This sign is well in excess of 100 square feet.
  2. An illuminated portable highway sign that has been used in several locations over the last two weeks.  The county ordinance expressly prohibits lighted political signs.  This sign is also in excess of 32 square feet.  I also request an investigation as to the appropriateness of using what appears to be county property in a political campaign.

Considering McKay campaign personnel were responsible for reporting the Dyson sign at the Applebasket, and that your organization acted on that complaint in less than 24 hours, I expect you should be able to issue the same $200/day citations to Mr. McKay within that same time period for each of these infractions.  If you are unable to, I would like a written explanation into the circumstances where you were able to react on the Dyson sign complaint and where you were unable to react on this McKay sign complaint.
